Status Change after check-in

So I will be staying in one Marriott property from March 2nd to April 1st which will get me from Gold to Platinum. I will be moving to a Sheraton on April 1st and stay there for 45 nights.

My booking for the Sheraton is currently for bed+breakfast as I wouldn’t get free Breakfast as Gold. However, I expect that my status would be updated to Platinum 2-3 days into my stay at the Sheraton.

Can I claim breakfast and lounge access as soon as I reach it and just show them my membership card on the app? Since my status was achieved by having stayed at a previous property and not during the stay at the Sheraton.

Normally not: your status for the stay is what is was at check in. However, the hotel might give you lounge access if you ask nicely. I don't think you should push this by asking to change to a rate without breakfast.

might be worth then staying 2-3 nights at a different property before checking in the Sheraton. I might even stay more than 45 nights there, so the savings on the breakfast charge (+ lounge access) would be worth the minor inconvenience.

Seems like with the promo announced you should get Titanium easily.

My stay at the Marriott will get me Platinum initially and my stay at the Sheraton will get me Titanium. Seems though I will have to leave a gap between those two stays to enjoy the Plat benefits.

Depends on the property. First time making platinum was over 10 years ago and happened to me mid-stay (previous stay posted a little late). Back then they didn't have the breakfast benefit but they had the internet benefit which was comped during checkout.

Depending on when you cross the Plat threshold, maybe you can break up your Marriott stay into 2 reservations. Check out and check back in.

Marriott Bonvoy stays have a funny habit of not posting properly. Then you must wait 10 days before being allowed to retro-claim. So any strategy that involves going somewhere else for a couple of days might just fail...

I would check out of the Marriott on Day 25 --> 50 nights with the double night promo. (or earlier if you already have some Bonvoy elite nights for 2022 and assuming that this is a paid stay) You could check back into the Marriott for a few more days on a separate reservation, or even as an OTA booking. Or of course, just move to a different hotel.

By the time you check into the Sheraton on April 1, your account should hopefully have been upgraded to Platinum.

another option is depending on what type of reservation you made with the sheraton, have them check you out once you see your status updated in the app and then ask them to make a new reservation with the same rate plan with the remaining days as they can input your number and the status it shows will match the status you have on your app (in the event you see it updated in the app) and you can enjoy the status for the rest of your stay.

Any change in status will not be reflected until after check out. But it’s easy enough to calculate when it will happen.

I too had the internet charge waived on a stay where the account status got upgraded after check-in. I wouldn’t count on a lounge access surcharge or breakfast charge being waived in the same way, but people may get lucky.

Be careful with consecutive reservations at the same property. Bonvoy (and also most other hotel programs) defines this as a single stay. In fact, the reservations might be combined for you, without anyone asking your permission to do so.

GUWonder Jan 27, 2022 7:57 am

Yes, and this kind of merging of reservations/stays is an issue that hits at Marriott and also the other major hotel brand programs.
