I'm not sure if this is directly a Marriott thing - I recall having BRG issues with Qunar and Ctrip in the SPG days (I don't remember using Trip.com back then because it was barebones rudimentary compared to Ctrip). Part of that certainly was some prices weren't always confirmed at reservation.

The reason at least historically was that sites like trip.com/ctrip.com do not have instant confirmation . I know that was the case in the past not sure if nowadays they have instant confirmation and the T&C haven't been updated.

And i have several screenshots from yesterday evening. Them showing this ! Also today this changed and now this offer isn't available anymore. @ least the rate @ trip.com has been ajusted. Indikating me that Marriott has investigated and forced the Hotel to ajust the rate!
Also clearly Marriott NOT argumented about instant confirmation, them argument was, that the rate is a prepaid one, and this wouldn't be valid for trip.com ! Following i copy the response.
Thank you for your additional inquiry regarding Marriott's Best Rate Guarantee. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you by clarifying the matter at hand.
The program terms state that the guarantee does not apply to pre-paid, non-refundable, or rates that do not provide immediate confirmation on Trip.com. I am unable to approve this claim because your screen shot indicates that prepayment is required.

More specifically, I believe it's because Trip/Ctrip do not play by the same "rules" as other booking sites. I have not had any direct experience, but anecdotally I've heard that they will offer discount rooms that are supposed to be allocated to a tour group, for example.

Trip.com has historically been offering two options confirmations, on demand and instant confirmations. Marriott consider any sites offering both on demand reservation and instant to be excluded from the Brg program and it was like this back in Spg as well.

So that means Marriott can dis-honor the BGR rate against Trip.com?

Must be a long time ago then. In my Gmail dated back in 2017 SPG agent agent replied with my Brg request towards trip.com was denied for being an on demand third party.
