This thread is about Marriott's BRG. If you don't know what BRG is - here's the Marriott BRG and here's the claim form.

I do have to mention that the competing website also has a rate with free 1 day cancellation deadline and the agent quote that rate as the rate ( which is same as Marriott)
Everything else is identical. This is the response email I got.
"When evaluating your claim, we must compare the same booking conditions confirmed as your official Marriott reservation including room type, dates of stay, and cancellation policies"
Maybe just a one off. May try again in future.

OK figured it out - the form breaks when you try to enter the rate in ZAR as per the local currency. Very nice agent on the phone worked with me to troubleshoot it. Ended up submitting a converted rate in CAD and it worked.
