I don't think this is new per se. I started the thread a month ago (or so) about the new promo I saw for double points on 2+ night stays through Feb 2022. Some people got through March 2022.

Sorry to hear that.

Targeted promotions can indeed be frustrating.

Promotions are not rewards for loyalty. That is part of the great marketing lie that "loyalty programs" have anything to do with loyalty. These programs are designed to incent stays at Marriott properties by increasing the return on the investment of your travel dollars, e.g. booking a $200 Marriott is ultimately least expensive than booking a $190 Hilton because I get breakfast at the Marriott which likely saves me more than the $10 difference. Accordingly, a promotion is designed to drive you to spend more money at their properties, e.g. more nights, more spending at F&B, etc. If Marriott believes that you're going to spend the same money whether or not you receive a promotion, then giving you the promotion has no upside to Marriott.
Consider. If every year, I travel extensively between January and October for business, but rarely travel in November and December, Marriott correctly assumes a promotion in the first part of the year most likely won't change my travel plans, but a good promotion around Thanksgiving and Christmas might cause me to book a vacation particularly if I were sitting on the fence about the trip. A promotion in the first half of the year is just a bonus for me, but gives Marriott nothing. An end of year promotion might mean additional revenue that it might not otherwise receive.
Of course, all of this is based on Marriott's analytics of my travel and spending patterns in the hopes of predicting my future behavior.

- I had no stays in the past year
- I had too many stays in the past year
- I don’t have any upcoming stays
- I have a bunch of upcoming stays
- I don’t live in the US
- my country is excluded
- I have LT status
- I had corn flakes for breakfast
No one has been able to figure out how Marriott chooses to hand out these promos. It’s as random as winning the lottery.
In my case, I had 110 nights last year, and a bunch of upcoming stays (most of which have now been canceled), and I was targeted for a double points promo.
I was wearing my pink panties the day I got the promo so I’m pretty sure that triggered the bonus.
