Canceling a stay after checking in on the mobile app

I just cancelled a stay due to bad weather, but one thing I was curious about was whether I could've checked in and still canceled without penalty. The mobile app let me start the process a couple of days before the cancellation deadline - if I had checked in, would I still have been able to cancel?

Yes but you have to call in... Also do you have any status with Marriott?

Yes, it is the deadline which matters.

But, as noted, call and get a cancellation #.

Thanks for the info. I'm Platinum if that makes a difference. So you have to call to cancel after checking in vs being able to self-serve on the app?

Correct... let CS reach out to the hotel..

......and be sure to get a cancellation number with a timestamp (email or print the page).

You can most certainly cancel your reservation via the APP or online after you have checked in. I have done it many times. I usually only make a reservation in advance when the cancellation deadline is 11:59 pm the night before or on the day of the stay. Even while checked-in, cancelling a stay generates a cancellation number, moves the stay into the cancelled stays list and emails you a confirmation of the cancellation. No need to call CS.

If you are past the cancellation window, the message feature is your friend. On several occasions I was unable to get to the property due to circumstances beyond my control. In one case, they cancelled my stay without a fee, in the other case, they shortened my stay by one night arriving a day later, again without a fee. Don't ever no-show.
