Cancellation Policy After COVID Exposure?

My wife and I were scheduled to travel tomorrow but found out we were exposed to someone with COVID. We are past the cancellation time for our two hotel stays (W Ft Lauderdale and JW Marriott Marco Island).

Is there an exception to the cancellation policy on account of this? Who do I contact?

Hi milemonkey,

If you could provide your reservation details to us via below email, we would help contact the hotels. Please include your Flyertalk username in the email.

It seems like the current policy expires in a couple of weeks, and afterwards it will follow the hotel policy.

But on my award reservations, it just says a fee applies, without any mention of it. Shouldn't the reservation state the cancellation penalty?

Can you update us as to what happened, so it might help someone else looking for similar information?

(I really dislike Marriott's policy of taking all the Lurker discussions offline. At least with SPG Lurkers, questions, discussion and outcome were almost always posted on FT!)

How severe is the exposure? Was it same room for >15 minutes in close proximity with masks off? Anything less than that is probably overreaction to cancel, IMO. Even room mates don't always pass on the virus to one another.

Both hotels graciously allowed us to cancel with no charge.

The alternative would have been to force the guests to come to the property and spread the virus there.

It is nice to hear when properties do the right thing. Too many times we hear about the failures. So it is also important to discuss the successes to keep a balanced view. My two cents....

CDC quarantine recommendation

Per the CDC recommendation

Who needs to quarantine?

People who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19—excluding people who have had COVID-19 within the past 3 months or who are fully vaccinated.
  • People who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 3 months and recovered do not have to quarantine or get tested again as long as they do not develop new symptoms.
  • People who develop symptoms again within 3 months of their first bout of COVID-19 may need to be tested again if there is no other cause identified for their symptoms.
  • People who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they have been fully vaccinated against the disease and show no symptoms.
What counts as close contact?
  • You were within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more
  • You provided care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19
  • You had direct physical contact with the person (hugged or kissed them)
  • You shared eating or drinking utensils
  • They sneezed, coughed, or somehow got respiratory droplets on you
