Lowest Occupancy on Sunday’s? Thoughts?

Per Kayak:

Kayak found that checking in on a Friday or Saturday and checking out on Sunday is the most expensive option overall. According to the website's data, a Sunday check-in is the
cheapest, followed by Monday and Tuesday.

Thoughts? is this generally true based on your experience?

I do find that late 4PM checkout is granted a lot more often on Sunday’s...

This is down to the occupancy of the hotel and in fancy speak "revenue management".

Definitely affected by location and the "style" of the hotel, ie: Resorts would likely be more full over the weekends, while CBD hotels will be less busy during the same time.

Sunday is lowest with the vacationers going home, and Business people yet to start their "work" schedules yet.

Yes, echo the above post comments about city business hotels vs weekend Resort hotels. The advanced rate Algorithms can be wierd on sundays. Also Sr rates (over 62) can vary more with "revenue mgt."

I have found non vacation areas that Monday-Wednesday are the most expensive and busiest while Checking in Thursday and Checking out Monday is the cheapest. Due to business travelers!

Like any conclusions based on statistics, the results are only as good as the data source. Since only the results are posted, it's hard to judge. I'd want to know the following:
  • Geography: Is this data for the United States or worldwide? Local customs will affect the results.
  • Customer Base: Is this data solely from Kayak.com searches? I'd guess that Kayak's customers are mostly leisure travelers. If these conclusions are based mostly on leisure travelers, it's far less useful.
  • Searches or Bookings: Is this based on searches or actual bookings? If it's searches, that means the conclusions might not be as accurate because it might be an oversampling of leisure travelers.
  • Time Period: Is this based on data collected over a month, a quarter, a year, or longer? The time frame when the data was collected might skew the data.

I worked as a Revenue Manager at two different hotels in the downtown area of a major metropolitan area. With the exception of Sundays being the lowest occupancy, the rest of Kayak's conclusions are the opposite of what happened in our hotels.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays were our most expensive nights, as we almost always were sold out. Rates for Sundays and Mondays were almost as much because these hotels were ones that catered to business travelers. If you were checking in on a Sunday, you were paying our weekday rates. Without getting into proprietary territory, the average weekday rate would be around $200/night.

In contrast, our weekend rates were significantly less than our weekday rates. As long as there wasn't a major event (concert, NFL or college football game), you could often stay at either of the hotels I worked for under $100/night.

So, I agree with the other folks that said this is dependent upon the hotel type and location. It's mildly interesting but not particularly useful information.

Is this unique to Marriott?

Definitely not. Perhaps mods should move the thread to TravelBuzz.

This kayak results would perfectly describe Las Vegas. Weekend rates can be astronomical, and weekday rates are dirt cheap.

Definitely opposite of major business heavy center cities.

Or other leisure-centric locations like Orlando.

In my checks for rooms for a single night in Manhattan, almost without exception Sunday night provides the most Marriott hotel rooms at <$120 than any other night I check.

Manhattan is a poor base case.

It's the only case I can make that has any data.... though I haven't logged the details or anything.
