Points for dining but not staying at hotels (Discussion Thread)

Hello all
Does anyone know if you can earn Bonvoy points when dining at, but not staying at, a hotel - for example, an Edition hotel?

Thank you!

I am not sure if there is an Edition hotel in the Asia-Pacific Region where the Marriott Bonvoy Dining program is offered for points accrual for people who aren’t staying at the hotels.

Should you always give the server your Bonvoy number?

I recently filled something out at a hotel but no points accrued.

If you're staying at the hotel and charge it to your room you should get points automatically. If you're not staying at the hotel you need to give the server your Bonvoy number

In the past, I've been told that I should take the restaurant receipt to the hotel's front desk to give them my frequent sleeper number,

Recently I was at the Cadillac Hotel in Miami (autograph collection). The waiter refused to take my Bonvoy points account. Maybe because it was an Autograph? Maybe because he was a lousy waiter? Who knows….

How many points do you earn per dollar when dining at a MR and not staying?

Same as what you earn for staying. No elite bonus points are given.

Having tried this 10-15 times I've never once actually had the points post. Only bother if you are interested enough in the points to chase it up for a few weeks with Marriott customer support and even then you've got about a 50-50 chance of seeing them.

Worked instantly for me at HKG Ritz-Carlton - they scanned the QR code on the Marriott app on my phone. Much better than the old system of paper chits!

In Singapore I have usually but not always seen the points post although when they have posted I have gotten elite bonus points somehow. Sometimes the transaction posts under the hotel name and sometimes as SINGAPORE DINING EARN + ELITE BONUS ON DINING EARN. A number of hotels in Singapore no longer seem to participate or give a discount on dining unfortunately.

Only time I ever got this to work was Starwood pre-merger.

Have not tried in Asia...sounds like this may be more common there. It was *supposed* to work anywhere with Starwood...sort of an unpublished (or less-published) benefit. But waitstaff often didn't know what to do with it and if it was just a mystery to everyone I didn't pursue it too hard.

That electronic membership card on the app is good for something then.

The time to ask about earning points is when you walk in or they take your order. Not when it's time to pay.

Points for dining without a stay?

I searched and searched and could not find the appropriate thread for this....

For the first time in my long tenure as a SPG/Marriott member I had dinner at a hotel restaurant without staying at this hotel. Since I know I can earn points for it, I asked the server. She told me I need to go see the front desk after I paid. I did that, and the person at the front desk had no idea how to do this. I had people waiting for me so I left. I called Marriott and they created a case on my behalf and sent it to the hotel since they are the ones that have to do this.

My question is -- how does a hotel do this, so that I know and can instruct them should I find myself in the same situation again?

In US, appears limited to former Starwood properties

See section 2.1.b.ii of the Program terms.

Read further down to see the qualifying properties (appears to be former Starwood.)

Different rules apply to regions outside the US.
