upgrading paid stay using points?

Just wondering: Is there any way to upgrade a paid stay using points? Or was this SPG benefit eliminated during the merger?

I'm aware of the option to straight-out redeem for a premium room / suite, but the value proposition doesn't tend to be overly exciting.

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, no. Points can't be used to upgrade a non-award room. And even with award rooms, points can only be used when making the reservation, assuming the hotel put any suites into the award room bucket of course. Though at check-in, it is possible the hotel will let you use cash to upgrade to a suite (even on an award reservation.)
