Membership Dates?

I've checked all over the Marriott website and can't confirm the information I found on another old thread here. Is the membership date for qualifying stays still Jan. 1 through Dec. 31? The person I spoke with on the phone said it was Jan. 31 to Jan 31 so my stays in Jan. 2019 don't count for the membership year we currently are in? Please advise. Thanks in advance!
