Master Billed rooms - General Discussion

I spend approximately ~100 nights at Marriott properties per year that are Master Billed to my employer. I also stay enough ony my own dime to earn Gold or Plat any given year (Currently Plat). I know I've seen reports of Elites being denied Club Access on Master Billed Rooms per the T&C. IME, that's always been spotty, even pre-merge. Same goes for the other benefits (welcome gift, late check out). Of course, Master Billed rooms have never earned Nights/Points/Stays for the room (except the odd exception or screw up).

However, last month, for the first time ever I was told that I cannot add my Bonvoy # to my room to earn points when ordering room service or eating at the hotel. It happened again twice this week, all at different properties. It appears that this has hit across the system, as my coworkers are all complaining about the same thing. It turns out that the new policy is that the member must stay on an eligible rate and settle the bill. FWIW, Hilton has long held a similar policy, which is why my personal nights were all at Marriott last year.

Am I crazy to think that this seems like a slap in the face? I understand not earning points for the night (the room rates are significantly below market rate, and our check-in/out times have always been bizarre). I'm not even asking to get lounge access (though many of my coworkers are). I just want to be able to earn points on the money that I actually spend.

I've had two master billed stays in the past month. In both cases, I added my Marriott number when I checked in and was given lounge access but no welcome gift. In one of the stays, I was upgraded to one of their best Suites because of my status. In both stays, I received credit for my bar spend.

For the upgrade and lounge access, it might help that you're PP while the OP is only Gold/Plat.

All depends what OP's employer has negotiated with Marriott. Could well be that all benefits/perks of status have been stripped out in return for a slightly lower corporate rate or that OP's employer is collecting something here.

The starting point for OP is to speak with his employer.

The contracts are with the individual properties, not corporate Marriott. I have good friends who work at one property we frequent (and one that's denied Bonvoy #s ), and they confirmed that the contract hasn't been changed, though it is up for renewal at the end of the year. They're quoting rules that are posted on the Bonvoy Employee intranet and a memo that went out.

Again, I'm not complaining about the loss of benefits. It sucks, but I can live with it; ultimately, I didn't pay for the room. I'm complaining about not being able to earn points on incidentals (which DO come out of my pocket).

Hi fezzington,

We would like to look into this issue, if you could provide your reservation details of those that you were not able to earn points on qualifying incidental spend. You may send the information via private mail here or by email below.

Elite Night Credit on Master Billed Rooms

I’m sure there is a thread where this belongs but I couldn’t find it.

Since the Bonvoy change, has anyone been getting elite night credit for Master billed (not direct billed) rooms?

A few months ago I had a stay, that posted about 10 weeks later, with the night credit. The only thing I charged to the room was breakfast one day. I received the elite night, my arrival gift and the points for the food charge.

When I looked at the T&C it seems that you should not get night credit. I’m wondering if me getting it was a fluke, if the presence of a room service charge triggered the night credit, or if everyone is getting credit for these stays now.

It is most likely a fluke, I had some eligible F&B charges on a Master billed room that hasn't posted to my account yet so I am following up with the property now before I reach out to Marriott Bonvoy.

I suspect this belongs in the Bonvoy Rewarding Events thread--since that's what most master billed rooms are about!

Ironically enough I received 1 Night elite credit when Marriott posted the missing F&B spend.

It was a pleasant surprise after calling the front desk to inquire if they would be posting that F&B spend or if I needed to reach out to Marriott.
