Compensation for deflagging properties

Second time this happened to me.

Booked a hotel on the Marriott site and a few weeks before the actual stay the hotel lets me know that they deflag. Luckily the stay is not canceled but gone are my Elite benefits and points.
The hotel was rather expensive and it's a 7-night stay. What frustrates me most is that we probably wouldn't have picked this hotel if it wouldn't be for the Marriott benefits and the points.... The location is not ideal and there were cheaper options.

By the time we were informed we could still cancel our stay but all other interesting hotels were fully booked or had become much more expensive.

So now we're stuck with an expensive hotel in a less than ideal location for which we won't get any benefits... (so far for loyalty... )

Did anybody manage to get some sort of compensation in scenarios like this?

What happened the first time?

I booked 2 nights at the Le Meridien Tahiti, one paid, one on points under SPG pre-merger. It deflagged before I was to stay. Marriott notified me of the changes and when I inquired with the property via email they advised that my Titanium status would be considered. Breakfast is a benefit that I value. I was more concerned about that than any upgrades.

Ultimately, I cancelled the reservation and chose an airbnb. A tweet to Marriott had both reservations cancelled and the original 12K SPG point night was credited to my account as 36K Marriott points.

What benefits are most important to you? I would call/email the property to see if they will honor them.

The first time I just let it go. Stayed in the hotel, got no points and no benefits but it was only for 2 days.

There was one extra case where I could cancel and book another Marriott nearby.

I will get in touch with Marriott and ask for the points and elite nights.

Was this a long time ago? I contacted Marriott through the normal support channels as well as twitter and all I get is no points, nothing, nada.

It was in December for a stay in February 2019.

You should receive refund of your original points. SPG 12K = Bonvoy 36K.

That is exactly what I received. :) They canceled my reservations (one paid, one points) on my behalf.

You're going to get nothing from Marriott, BUT you might want to reach out to the hotel and let them know the reasons why you booked. Have specific benefits in mind AND an equivalent cost of what those benefits are really worth. Marriott points are generally valued at $0.007 each. Have all of this ready to go when you call them. Be pleasant and nice and they might well send you some benefits your way. If you get nowhere with the hotel now, try again when you check in and see what they can come up with.

Hope you realize that Flying for Fun had at least 1 night as an award stay that cost them 12K, I assume the 12K (36K MR) that FfF got from MR was a refund of their pts that they used and it wasnt any Compensation. I believe you arent on an award stay thats why you got nada, had FfF been n arev stay as well they too would have gotten nada

As you posted above the options are usually a full refund of $$ or Pts or both (no compensation) or if the Hotel agrees ( many dont) that you can keep the res as is but get no benefits of any kind, over the years theres been tons of folks that got no options and instead got a full refund of what they paid as tghe hotel didnt want to honor the reses for any number of reasons, so to an extent you are already 1 up as the hotel could have said no reses would be honored and thusly youd be forced to CX the whole trip or payup for whatever hotel is still available

Yes, that is correct. I had one night on a 12K award and one night revenue. When the property deflagged, Marriott advised that the hotel would honour my reservations but my Marriott benefits would not be guaranteed. The property, in good faith, said they would "consider" my Marriott status to a similar level in their own Loyalty Program. Ultimately, I decided to cancel, still within the original cancellation guidelines of the Marriott reservation. Since I had two nights with one as an award, I reached out to Marriott to assist with the cancellation. They had no problem crediting 36K MR for the 12K SPG award and cancelled both reservations on my behalf as requested. I wasn't seeking any additional compensation as I didn't believe I was due any. The reservation was made in good faith many months ahead of the deflagging decision. Marriott was proactive in keeping me informed and honoured their original cancellation policy.

I initially missed the point that it was an award stay. Thanks for pointing that out.
And yes, I suppose you're right, they honored the reservation which I appreciate. I was only frustrated about missing out on a significant number of points.

Thanks for the reactions.
