I had a similar experience last week in Florida. I had a 6 night stay, so I broke it down to 4 and 2 nights to take advantage of the 1500 point bonus. I finished a 4 night stay at a full service Marriott stay and took an Uber to a nearby Residence Inn. lucky for me they had a room available at 8:45 AM. So I checked in, and before I went to my room to drop off the suitcase, I was invited to have breakfast. I had eaten breakfast at the Marriott, so I kindly declined except for a cup of coffee.
I think this happens more at the lower level properties that have an open breakfast buffet.
PS. Before anyone makes a comment about not breaking down the stay to 3 two night stays, I was pretty tired and it had been a long week, so I didn't want to move twice. (I could have as there was a courtyard nearby as well)

Something I do when I check-in early (whether or not my room is ready) is towards the end of the check-in process I ask whether the breakfast is still open for service and how much we would be charged if we went in now to have breakfast.
I would say in about 1/3 cases the FO agent will invite us to have it for free (especially if the room is not yet ready and I am unable to sign the bill to the room) … which I don't think would have been offered if I hadn't brought it up. In 2/3 cases though I do just get informed of the rates and the opening times.

Every time when I check in to Hyatt Regency Etoile Paris after early morning flight arrival, the room would not be ready until after noon. But I was always given a key to the Regency Club Lounge for breakfast and hang out if I wanted to. One year when the Regency Club was closed for renovations, FD escorted me to the restaurant to instruct them that I was having complementary breakfast. Not a Marriott but the same concept.

My corporate rate usually gets me breakfast for two in Europe, and I also get breakfast for two as a Titanium member... I usually get early check-in (9 -ish, depending where I go). I know the conventional thinking is that you don't get plat + corporate breakfast, but does anyone here ask to use a breakfast on the day of arrival, on the grounds that you technically have double-breakfast? I've only tried doing that once in Amsterdam and they laughed at me and said "no". This post refers to hotels without an executive lounge.
