It looks like Marriott is offering a discount on points purchases. Have they traditionally done this before? I know I remember seeing it with Starwood but not with Marriott.

I don't know if Marriott had done this before, but this is a lousy deal. 1.25 cents a point with a 25% "bonus" still costs close to 1 cent a point. I struggle to redeem them at more than 0.8 cent value. Unless they sell them at 0.6 cent a point, why bother. IMHO.

Because it costs them nothing and somebody will bite. It only takes one to make a profit.

I agree with you that there is only upside for Marriott in this deal, so it is worthwhile for them. I was thinking about why should the potential buyers bother, unless they just need a small top up to make a reservation work.

Just to buy points for no reason is almost always a bad deal. That said, there are plenty of examples of people redeeming for over 1 cent per point here. There are plenty of instances where this can make sense.

Starwood used to sell point at 0.02625$ when running a promo. So 0.01$ per Bonvoy point is not a great deal IMO...

The only time I ever bought SPG pts is when they were on sale for half price or $0.0175/pt. So Iíll consider buying when Bonbon pts are $0.0058 or less.
