The Westin Pittsburgh, PA [Master Thread]

A brief view of my week spent at this property for a conference. Yeah it’s a big conference hotel so I shouldn’t of expected much. But I got even less than what I expected.
High/low points:
Showers are great, bell staff is great (Ricky and Leroy especially) Bill’s burger bar is a decent restaurant with great craft beer.

The first room I was allotted was right next to housekeeping: second room was filled with cigarette smoke even though it’s a non-smoking hotel: the third room had a fighting/partying couple next door for several nights of my stay. I could’ve moved but I was really tired of moving. Housekeeping was extremely lax and left dirty towels in the bathtub, didn’t replenish basic supplies.
And the heavenly bed definitely needs replacing – I had a heavenly bed for several years so I know what they’re like. This was definitely on it’s last legs.
All that said - – the manager definitely made things right and comped my Non- room charges, about the equivalent of a one night stay. I felt this was a very satisfactory resolution, but it came after several conversations with front desk personnel.

I’d like to go back to Pittsburgh as I really enjoyed my stay but I don’t think I’ll stay at a Marriott branded hotel next time.

Thanks for the review. Much appreciated.

Pittsburgh has multiple Marriott options (Marriott, Renaissance, new Autograph Collection, AC, etc), so the not staying at a Marriott branded hotel based on a single property doesn't really make sense to me, but that's certainly your option if you get back to the area.

Cheers.

Having read the various reviews of the other Marriott properties

I probably stay at the Renaissance if I could afford it, but the other ones don’t have much appeal for me.

Yes, the Renn is certainly the top recommendation. I never understood why Westin dropped the William Penn, a classic old hotel, to pick up the generic convention center property. I guess it's more profitable given the number of rooms

Yes stay at the Renaissance. I stayed at the Marriott downtown a few months ago and I would rate the hotel as fair. Nothing really stood out. I've heard really nice things though about the Renaissance so that's where I will be staying next time.

One of the first hotels in a while to deliberately mention my high floor preference in my Marriott profile - nice to see that properties do read these.

Perhaps, I just had low expectations for my first hotel in Pittsburgh, but I left the Westin Pittsburgh feeling like this was a positive hotel experience. The property is definitely from another decade and is probably ready for a renovation at some point, but I’ve seen older. Here are my impressions:
  • Upgraded the morning of arrival to a Corner Suite - upon check-in, they told me they placed me on the top floor in a Corner Suite based on the high floor preference in my Marriott account (nice)
  • The suite has two separate rooms - what I imagine is a normal room with normal bathroom connected to a long hallway with a living room at the end
  • Living room couch was quite comfortable
  • TVs had latest Internet TV OS
  • Bed was good - covers could be thicker, but the two soft pillows stacked on top of each other were great, and the mattress was nice and plush
  • Shower pressure was fine / decent / good
  • Liked that the shower curtain rod was curved - roomy shower
  • Called down for more tissues - they brought up two boxes and made my bed while I was at breakfast (day of departure)
  • Views were good and noise isolation internally and externally was good
  • Brought a welcome gift of assorted packaged snacks - so excited about the Goldfish (childhood favorite)
  • Offered late checkout proactively - no issue with 4 PM
  • Elite welcome gift breakfast in 2nd floor restaurant is just the continental buffet (some scones, fruit, and cereal), but the full buffet is just a $4 upcharge - eggs, bacon, and pancakes were all good for a buffet standard - the waitress was friendly and personable

Overall, I would have no issue returning here, even without renovations.
