Millions of points, out of the blue.

Hi all. I知 completely new here, although I知 a loyal customer at various programs (platinum skyteam, spire IHG, Diamond Hilton).

Now something happened to my Marriot Bonvoy. I知 silver elite, and only 16 nights on account so far.

However on on my last stay they allocated 70.000.000 points to my account!!

Tempting to start using those as if I won the lottery...

what shall I do? Any tips? :-)

thanks

Let it sit there and draw interest!

Seriously, I would contact the hotel directly and see if maybe they won't toss you a bone for being honest. Presumably there's some kind of audit process where this will eventually be flagged and reclaimed.

I stayed in a renaissance abroad. And unfortunately the points never came. So the hotel contacted the us team to get it fixed. Pretty big fix...

but if it痴 given by a property, then they may have messed up on the currency exchange. Was your last stay in like Indonesia or Vietnam?

Happened to me once when SEK was awarded 10:1 as if it were in USD (about 1USD:7SEK at the time), so 6 times what I was expecting. Give it 10 days or so, it'll get clawed back.

I suspect the error will correct itself, especially since you posted here. Just wait a week.

I wonder what would happen if the OP books something using points. How would they claw back? Would it be indiscriminate?

Travel packages! They always give the big warning that the miles transfers are irreversible...

The points windfall is likely to be crawled back. The ebonus tool for point posting seem to require hotel staff to convert to USD instead of just entering it in local currency and the system converted to dollars in the background using the day's exchange rate.

At the big picture, hotel is paying in an approximation a penny ($USD 0.01) a point for you. So if they accidentally credited you 5,000,000 points, it would have costed them $US 50,000 if they don't follow up.

OP received 70MM points. Using your math, hotel is paying 700K USD. I am sure someone from accounting will notice.

When I had a 9 million point windfall, I reported it and didn't even receive a thank you.
