Consecutive night pricing error?

Curious if anybody has come across this before— I was looking to book two nights somewhere inexpensive in Boston for this weekend and noticed that the rate for 2 consecutive nights on the same reservation was about $30 higher than booking those two nights (same room type) on separate reservations. I’m not able to post screen shots but it was roughly $270 for the single reservation and $130/$112 for the separate reservations. Makes no sense to me... called the titanium CS and was escalated to a supervisor and put on hold— the call dropped after about 10 minutes on hold. Am I missing something here with this? Seems very misleading if it is more than just a pricing error.
I booked the separate reservations and will have them combine them upon check in

I see this with some frequency. You just have to check different ways of booking your stay and make sure to pick the same room type.

Yes it's really frustrating. I book the Courtyard in SF weekly and booking 2 nights in a row is cheaper than booking 3 nights in a row per night so I have to make 2 res.

I have had the opposite. There is a hotel near Dulles very expensive Sun-Thursday. (Marriott Dulles Suites) Very inexpensive on the weekends. If one reserved Sat-Monday or Thur-Sat, it would apply a weekend rate to Sun or Thurs respectively. The difference was so much that two nights was less than one.

It's probably not a mistake. Revenue management software sets prices based on the maximum rate it thinks guests are willing to pay for a given arrival and departure date. It arrives at these rates using complex algorithms based on historical data including rates paid, possibility of cancelation, and possibility of early departure.

In this situation, the software believes that someone arriving and staying two night is willing to pay more than two one-night guests. Less likely, the software might believe that the two-night guest has a high likelihood of checking out after just one night and it's unlikely that the hotel can resell that vacant room on the day of arrival.

Is it a sneaky practice? Yes. Is it confusing and nonsensical to virtually everyone who hasn't worked in revenue management? Yes. Does it make the hotel (and by extension the brand) look bad? Yes. Is it likely to change? Doubtful, since most guests don't know to check nights individually or they know but won't make the effort to check (particularly on anything over 3 nights).

As writerguyfl pointed out, it is likely programmed in by Revenue Management instead of an error.

That's how you deal with this issue. :)

I suspect that some of the differing rates reflect the hotel's estimate of how much (profitable) spend the guest will do during a stay, which can also depend on what the hotel charges for the nightly room rate.
