Marriott Bonvoy Hotels at Honolulu/Oahu, Hawaii

Headed to the Big Island next fall and want to spend three nights in HNL on the way there. Budget allows for a Cat 5 at 35k/nt so wondering whether to book the Princess Kaiulani or the Courtyard Waikiki Beach?

Two "active" seniors and no kids; we plan on doing a lot of walking, etc. plus spending some time on Waikiki, so are looking primarily for a "decent" room plus a pool to relax beside in the evening.

Doing the same exact trip as you in May, and doing 3 nights at The Laylow before 5 nights at Mauna Kea on the Big Island.

I tried to ask this question at Sheraton Waikiki thread but didn't get any responses, so maybe this is a better place to ask. Moderator if there is already an existing thread on Honolulu hotels please merge, and delete my earlier post at Sheraton Waikiki ......

I have a current late April 7-night booking with Marriott Waikiki with old cat 8 certificate. I also have a Sheraton Waikiki booking which I can convert another old cat 8 to new cat 6 certificate to attach it against.

Which one is better in terms of experience, considering this is first time at Oahu and we have 2 small kids + wife coming together? It looks like Sheraton is better than Marriott in terms of location?

35k for those properties seem like a terrible waste of points.. i d look at paid options ar sheraton or moana or book smth respectable outside starriott or on priceline...

Isn't there already a legacy Marriott Honolulu thread? Why not merge these threads into one?

In Oahu, Why do majority of Marriott properties charge extra person fee?

I was looking to book a Marriott property in Waikiki area and noticed the majority of the hotels(Sheraton, Laylow, Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfside) charge outrages extra person fee on top of the resort fee and tax. These hotels are not family friendly!!! Only option for me is the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at 50K/night or The Ritz-Carlston Residence at 60K/night. Also noticed that at RC, no resort fee and parking was only $35 compare to Marriott at $45. Ritz look good so far, but about 10-15 walk from beach.

I was researching and noticed the Sheratons now charge extra person fee and Marriott Waikiki does not. something to look into when have kids. You should also read up on Tripadvisor on the hotels... I would prefer Marriott, short block from the beach. Sheraton beach doesn't good depending on beach tide too.

Don't forget these legacy threads:

Courtyard Waikiki and Marriott Waikiki: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marr...-marriott.html

Sheraton Princess Kaiulani: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marr...er-thread.html

Sheraton Waikiki: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marr...er-thread.html

The Laylow, Autograph Collection: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marr...-hawaii-2.html

The Royal Hawaiian, Luxury Collection: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marr...er-thread.html

Westin Moana Surfrider: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marr...er-thread.html

Then there is the Hawaii statewide thread: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marr...l-islands.html

Maybe these should be at the top of this thread.

I emailed Sheraton Waikiki about this. This is what I got from them today:

Aloha,
Thank you for your inquiry with us at the Sheraton Waikiki Resort and Spa!

All of our rooms allow for two (2) adults and two (2) children, under the age of 17, so there will be no additional charge for your children. We do apologize that our website is showing an additional fee. Please disregard the additional fee as we have been experiencing a system error with this matter, but please be assured that we will not charge you any additional fees, upon checkout, for children under 17.

Please let us know if we may be of any further assistance.

Mahalo,
************************************

So Marriott's website still has issues and charges extra person fee when it shouldn't have.

I am now leaning more towards staying at Sheraton Waikiki than Marriott as it seems more central, and their pool facilities seems better than Marriott.

Very strange that Marriott 1-800 rep did not know about kids staying free and they only explained to me that its base on type of room. So, I called the hotel direct and spoke to onsite reservation rep and she told me that kids do stay free base on adult reservation. I think Marriott needs to fix or may note on online reservation when you enter # of kids with reservation because online system somehow thinks it's 3rd person staying.

Stayed at Marriott Waikiki last month.
I do not have time to list all the problems, but I would never stay there again.
Sheraton Waikiki would be a vastly better choice.

Marriott Waikiki -

1. Attempted to overcharge room rate AFTER check-in.
2. Upgraded room was anything but upgraded.
3. Requested Front Desk to put disagreement in writing. Front Desk disregarded request completely.
