Will this Mattress Run idea work?

Need 27 more Elite Nights to hit SPG/Marriott Platinum Elite, plan:
  • Get Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card - 15 nights
  • Buy 2 nights outright in December
  • Travel to Denver to a Category 1 Marriott, sign up for 2 rooms for 5 nights each, using points (60,000 pts used total) to pick up 10 nights. I would check in, live in the rooms a bit :-) and fly back the same night.
Any blockers? The most unsure area is getting 10 nights in a week by using miles to book 2 rooms for 5 nights each at the same hotel.

NO.

1. I'm not sure about the timing for the credit card. It's not obvious that you'd get 15 nights this year if you apply now.

2. New rules are that we can only earn nights credit for one room per night. Also, if you disappear after the first night, most hotels will notice and automatically check you out, so that you'd probably only earn about two nights.

3. If you need 27 nights, this means that you've stayed only 33 nights, so are the status benefits you would use worth the cost of getting 27 additional nights? Do you expect your travel to increase dramatically for next year?

Great answers! Unhappy result, but thank you!

To answer your question, yes we intend to use the Platinum benefits quite a bit in 2019. Specifically, we see that we need to be at Platinum to get access to the SPG Lounge. Gold used to get us there, and our AmEx Member Rewards card comes with Gold, but no longer. Lounge access is pretty important to our stays... do you happen to know another way to get Lounge access if I'm only Gold?

In any case, thanks very much for the great info and fast response. Much appreciated!

Book club level rooms? It could cost a lot less than a 27 night mattress run.

If you *must* qualify (and I don't think it's worth it for you - just pay for the Club access at hotels that offer it) then:

1) Get 10 nights holding a $100 meeting (Google for details on how to do this) leaving you with 17 eligible nights to go...

or

2) Register for the Platinum challenge and do 16 paid-for nights in 3 months

You might be better off doing a meeting (10 nights), the credit card (15) and any mattress runs and/or challenge in early 2019. That way you'd at least get two years of Platinum and probably PP from regular stays during the year.

As others have mentioned, multiple rooms or long mattress run stays can easily backfire.
