Sorry. I don't have a booking and I dont intend to book unless I understand if I will or will not get elite credit as I will be paying more to book Ritz vs ShangriLa... And it will be a hassle to seek a refund if it turns not that I won't get the elite benefits.

Thanks.

Could you provide the name of The Ritz-Carlton hotel via private message and the exact link to the rate if possible so we can check for you?

Please let us know if you need further assistance.

I just did this again 9/3-9/4. Maybe I am extremely lucky, but booking prepaid Amex FHR online has always given me 5x Amex and Bonvoy night credits and points. There is a field to enter your Bonvoy # while you are filling out your details before pulling the trigger on the booking. The reservation showed up online with Marriott within a few minutes. At checkin I was greeted as a Titanium, told about the $100 Amex credit, and also given 2 x $30 hotel credits for myself and my +1 for breakfast. At checkout I was pleasantly surprised when the FDA mentioned that there was a small overage on my breakfast (I spent $70 instead of $60) and proactively comped the $10 overage. That was a very nice touch, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that again. I was definitely treated as a first class citizen even with a prepaid Amex rate.

You're safest bet is to use a STARS/Luminous agent which guarantees you the night/points and has all the inclusions of FHR, and actually places you higher on the priority list for check ins and upgrades etc. This removes any potentially for confusion from FHR and fighting for your nights/points credit.

Quick question(s)
Should one expect a double upgrade if elite in Marriott and using the FHR rate
Should one expect something in addition to free breakfast if Marriott Elite and booking a FHR rate.

Thanks

I am not a fan of FHR. Respectfully however, I am confident this is not unilaterally true. After seeing this claim in another thread, I have asked many hotels (including very popular hotels across multiple chains/brands) and not a single person has told me STARS/Virtuoso bookings have upgrade priority compared to elite status or FHR. Actually, a few GMs even specifically said that all preferred agent programs are pretty low for upgrade priority (relative to repeat guests, VIPs, and status). The main benefit with an agent is that they can solicit an upgrade on your behalf but anyone with time can accomplish this by reaching out to the hotel themselves. The agent I primarily book with has made it clear to me that she has strong relationships with a few hotels on my radar and can ask the teams there to extend courtesies for her clients at these hotels. However, she cannot feasibly do this for everyone she books there so it is only reserved for clients that put in a lot of business through her.

Not trying to disparage you. I respect the fact that you have a business that must be run. I just think that if sweeping statements like STARS has higher priority for upgrades are made, its best if they are grounded in evidence. Fundamentally, I agree with your overall idea.

With that being said, if Marriott ever releases a formal policy stating that FHR prepaid bookings ARE innately elite qualifying, I think FHR easily becomes the best method of booking Marriott stays. This is because 5x MR back on hotel stays is so much better than 6x Marriott. By my valuations, 6x Marriott is a credit card rebate of 4.2% whereas 10x MR is worth 15% (or 20% for business Centurion holders). If this ever happens, I would book all of my Marriott stays through FHR just for this insane rebate increase. IMO the biggest problem with Bonvoy from a rewards perspective is the weak credit card rebate. This would solve this. I wish Marriott would make STARS more competitive with a unique perk like Prive confirmed upgrades of Impresario double points.

Depends entirely on the hotel. Sometimes you will get multiple breakfast credits. Oftentimes, you will not. With upgrades, IME there is no difference if you already have elite status. Hotels that dont like giving out upgrades (and thus do not follow chain policies) are not going to suddenly become more generous just because you have two avenues for receiving upgrades.

Yes totally hear you on the 'evidence' side. It's hard to say as I don't use the FHR program to see what the success rate is to compare. All we know is that it's publicly stated our clients have the priority, so we also like to convey this message! Plus we have very good ins with the above property leadership who can also make things happen. But yes, within an actual 'success' report, it's hard to say either way but this is in theory, how it should be.

Totally hear you too on the math too. Prive is a good one we book a lot, for your exact reasoning about the confirmed side of things.

Anyway, back to FHR chat...!

Could you cite the official source where it is publicly stated that STARS/Virtuoso has upgrade priority over FHR (and presumably elite status)?

I send you a PM with the source directly from our Marriott STARS portal, as I'd rather not share publicly the wording from there.

Thanks for sending me the wording. In any case, I respectfully disagree with your interpretation of the text. If anything, it indicates that there is first priority over other programs for room type (which is guaranteed for everyone except a few brands after the recent update anyway) and not for room upgrades.

I just had a stay at Ritz Carlton PERTH through Amex FHR using some Platinum travel credit before it expired - I booked it online and had an Australian Amex Plat Res agent on the phone - she called hotel and put my Marriot Gold # in booking - upon arrival I received 2 letters detailing benefits - one as Amex FHR with US$100 4pm checkout 12 noon checkin if available and upgrade - and a separate Marriott Bonvoy appreciation letter - I got a great free upgrade from basic room to Larger Studio with sea/river/city and Elizabeth Quay views Points posted to my Marriot Bonvoy a/c yesterday morning (Tuesday) - checked out Monday total 7361 pts for 1 night (2K Bonus Marriot offer, base points 4289 + 1732 Elite Bonus)

I prepaid FRH online through Amex Travel and added my MR number to the reservation. I received 5x points and the $200 statement credit. I stayed at the Ballantyne in Charlotte, NC this past weekend and checked out on Sunday (Nov 7th). They made a big deal about being FHR AMEX Platinum member and had a personalized letter for me. They did say to make sure I used an Amex card with my name on it for everything at the hotel. I checked in at the front desk to make sure my MR number was attached to the reservation and it was. I just received all entitled points and elite credit nights today (Thursday, Nov 11) in my Marriott account, to include promotional points. Hope this helps some folks.
