Policy: 4.3.c.v: 4 p.m. Late Checkout. Platinum Elite Members and above may check out as late as 4 p.m. local time of the Participating Property. Members can request late checkout when making a reservation through central reservations, at check-in, via the mobile app (where available) or at any time during their stay. At Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Platinum Elite Members and above are guaranteed a late checkout up until 2 p.m. local time and may request to check out as late as 4 p.m. local time based upon availability. This benefit is guaranteed at all Participating Properties, except at resort and convention hotels and Design Hotels, where it is based upon availability. Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club, Sheraton Vacation Club, Westin Vacation Club, The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale, and Ritz-Carlton Reserve are excluded from this benefit.

Participating Property = any property that participates in the Marriott Bonvoy program, subject to the exclusions below.

Brands and hotels where "Based Upon Availability" apply: Resort and convention hotels, Design Hotels, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy
Not Available: Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club, Sheraton Vacation Club, Westin Vacation Club, The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale, and Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Recommendations from Xero after an epic battle with Marriott/hotel.

Here is what I learnt if a hotel denies 4 PM checkout.

1) Call Marriott. Ask about the 4 PM checkout guarantee. If the phone agent claims it is based on availability, ask for a supervisor. If the supervisor also claims late checkout is based on availability, hang up and call again. Keep trying until you get an agent that acknowledges the 4 PM checkout guarantee.

2) When you get an agent that acknowledges the guarantee, ask for a case number. Then, let the agent know the hotel violating the policy. In addition, ask if the agent can call the hotel directly to explain the policy. They or their supervisor should have no issue calling the hotel to clarify policy with them.

3) If the agent is unable to get hold of the hotel or a hotel manager, call back tomorrow and follow up on the case number. When the phone agent picks up, immediately give them the case number. Again, have them call the hotel. By having a case number, you don't have to argue that the 4 PM checkout is "based on availability". The agent will immediately read the case and learn that the 4PM checkout is an actual guarantee.

4) (Optional) Keep the case number handy for future hotel reservations. If you get another hotel that denies you late checkout, call Marriott and give them the case number. The agent will realize that 4 PM checkout is a guarantee. Then state that another hotel is denying the benefit and the agent to call he hotel.

If the Marriott hotel you're staying at is in the US and isn't on this list, then you should be good to go for guaranteed 4 pm checkout - meaning if they deny you, they're in violation of the program.

Is that a Tribute property? Unless it's a resort ... which seems unlikely, 4 PM is guaranteed. This has been the rule at legacy Marriott since 2016 and since this is a legacy SPG property, it's even before that.

For Legacy Marriott properties post merger I have been impressed. 100% of my reservations have been upgraded pre arrival. Marriott has been proactive in contacting me (a liaison) prior to my arrival. For my last stay at the Renaissance LAX I advised by return email that I had a 10:30 pm flight and that my preference would be for a high-floor with airport view and as late of a check-out as possible.

Within 30 minutes I received a reply. I had been upgraded to a top-floor Suite. She also advised that as a PPE I had a 4:00 pm guaranteed late check-out but as a courtesy she extended my check-out to 6:00 pm. My key card was appropriately programmed.

There are going to be a few bad apples in every bin. In my experience, The Marriott apple variety has been pretty good. If I happen to pull a bad apple I just don't support that apple going forward. It doesn't mean that overall the Marriott variety isn't tastey.

Again, in my experience, The SPG apple variety hasn't been very good at all. At what point do you stop pulling apples and assume there aren't any in the bin that don't leave a bad taste in your mouth?

I want to know more about this "guaranteed" check-in time? Here I thought it was just a target that hotels usually achieve, but if not ... "we were full, so running behind. Stuff happens ..."

So.. my argument is, how do I know what hotels qualify for the guarantee late checkout. I really wish Lurker or Marriott would chime in with the official response or list. I have no problem with hotels that fall under the exceptions. Just make it clear. Have a list, or just have it somewhere on each property “This resort/conference property does not guarantee 4pm checkouts”.

The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas is a resort.

Obviously I’m not ranting about the Cosmopolitan specifically, more just how there is no where for any of us to know which properties count or don’t count. Please make it obvious.
This has already been passed along to the loyalty team as a suggestion.

USA versus abroad doesn't matter. The question is whether the place is classified as a resort.

4pm late checkout logistics

I'm Platinum. At applicable properties, is 4pm checkout automatic or only by request?

If it's only by request, but you neglect to request it, what happens to your personal belongings in the room past the normal checkout time? Is there a risk of returning at 3:30pm to an empty room, or are hotels smart enough to realize that an elite guest simply forgot to request late checkout?

I always have to request it! 50% of the time the front desk agent will say what time check out is. I would assume if you left your belongings in the room past checkout time they would give you a call you never know. Heck I wouldn't be suprised if some properties would charge you a extra day.

Just don't leave your stuff in your room beyond the time that hotel staff believe you are checking out. Hard to guess exactly what would happen - there's definitely a chance it would be something which would inconvenience you.

I think the rules state it can be requested at any time during the stay, but one would think you should have some sort of request in prior to the normal check out time on your last day.

No Idea what might happen if you don't request it, but if housekeeping found your belongings, I'm sure there will be some communication. If staff is reasonable and on top of it, seeing that you are platinum, might just adjust your check out to 4pm. Who knows for sure... What if staff promised your room to someone early, seeing that you didn't request a late check out?

Found this... Gold has similar wording but 2pm, platinum and above is below...

Marriott BonvoyTM Platinum Elite Members may check out as late as 4 p.m. local time. You can request a 4 p.m. Late Checkout when making a reservation through central reservations, at check-in, via the Mobile App (where available) or at any time during your stay. This benefit is guaranteed at all Participating Properties, except at resort and convention hotels and Design Hotels™, where it is based upon availability. Late Checkout is not available at Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club and participating Vistana Signature Experiences properties.

Always, always give front desk a call, or stop by front desk before you step out to request of confirm.
Don't assume. Besides, most hotels these days lock you out via your key card past the usual check out time anyway.
So even when I have confirmed late check out at 4pm in the morning before I leave the property, I always have to return to reactivate me card for later half in the afternoon to enter the elevator to go back to my room.

I'm asked at check-in 90% of the time if I'll be needing a late check out. I also will give them the expected time (if earlier than 4) so the hotel can plan appropriately for the room. If the check-in clerk doesn't ask, I'll bring it up.

The last couple of times I "checked in" via the mobile app, the hotel said the app didn't work on their end.

Not sure if I would count on this. I had a long stay (5-nights) and I ended up changing rooms the first night. In those days I was unpacking for long stays. When I moved rooms, I left the clothes in the drawer and by the time I got back to the first room housekeeping had bagged them up and I'm not sure I would have heard a word as she first denied even having them but when pushed about the bag on her cart, it was "oh, these clothes". I would guess if they believe you have gone, it all over. A trick I do is take a piece of paper and write on it 4pm Check Out and fold it to fit in the card slot on the door. Pretty obvious then.

My experiences are the check-in person will ask you 50% of the time.

I never had any problem with leaving late (i.e. don't get my stuff taken out of my room early), 4 p.m. check-out 100% satisfied.

I use mobile app to assign 4 p.m. check-out 100% of the time, but curious the staff will still ask me "would you like late check-out sir", so this tells me either they are asking me again to double check (less likely) or like what some have said the information isn't passed on to the establishment (more likely)

If at check-in they didn't ask (and I forget to ask too), I usually go back to them and tell them I needed 4 p.m. check-out (just to make sure). A few times my keycard stopped working after 12 p.m. and I had to go to the front desk to get it fixed (or extended), and they would then ask "so you need late check-out sir?" So it does happen.

Conclusion - always ask. Some of you might feel this should be automatic and you don't need to open your mouth. But to the establishment they know not all Platinum/Titanium/Ambassador need to stay as long as 4 p.m., and the more accurately they can expect out check-out time (like I'm checking out at 10 a.m. to catch a flight instead of 4 p.m.), the easier they can turnover our rooms for the next guest.

Please be courteous and help them do that. I have been told by management that Platinums (and above) are only hurting themselves, if they can't turnover the suites, then they don't have a suite for you at the time of your check-in. They found many Platinums are leaving early anyway (before 12 noon) but will simply say they need the room till 4 p.m. As a result, they can't turnover the suites that they would of prioritize and then have it available for Platinum or above upgrades.
