Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Another question I cannot find the answer to in extensive reading of this thread. If you do an OC1-5 to NC1-4 conversion and you find that you will not be able to use the NC1-4 by its expiration date can you then cancel and get refunded in points? Will the refund be 45K points? Also wondering reservation using these travel packages can be made for another person, i.e. gifting it to a family member with same last name?

When they cancel your OC1-5 to NC1-4, the certificate automatically resets its clock to one year from the date. So basically you have one extra year to use it.
Yes, you can cancel it and get 45K back to your account, but I think keep it as a N-C for 7 nights is much more valuable compared to 45K.
Yes, you can gift it to a family member, even friends.

Is the "convert" option dead? At least, it is to me. I called UK number at least 4 different times in the last couple days and they were not able to convert OC5 to NC5 with 105K points. Every single time, I was told that it can't be done anymore.

If you have the points try making the booking with points - be sure to read the terms when booking to ensure they are refundable
Then calling and asking to attach your travel cert instead of points.

Try another country perhaps.

Thank you all for sharing your experience, as someone who wants to do an OC to NC conversion (with a cat upgrade), I found the information here very valuable.

One thing I'm still a little confused about is this: once you receive a NC from an OC (equivalent cat conversion without any upgrades), can't you just pay additional points to upgrade the NC you received to a higher cat NC, where the points required would follow the new Travel Package table on https://www.marriott.com/loyalty/red...el/packages.mi ?

I'm not sure why everyone who wants to do an "upgrade conversion" is trying to do the upgrade when the OC gets converted to the NC.
Wouldn't it be easier to simply get a NC that is equivalent to the OC first, and then call again to upgrade the NC you have to a higher category NC by paying the difference in points required?
You think people have not thought about that? There are obvious reasons. You have not read back enough the history. People are not dumb if what you think is feasible, why no one attempts it. Common sense would tell you that there must be reasons.

It is already difficult to get an upgrade at the time OC convert to NC. It is exponential more difficult to almost impossible when it is an NC and one tries to upgrade, because the new Travel Package T&Cs specifically FORBID upgrade, among other things. In fact it does not even allow change of reservation or cancel the cert - i.e. there presumably no residual value when cancelling an NC according to the new Travel Package T&Cs.

Anybody has an OC and does not have any immediate need of a booking, should wait as long as possible before doing anything to the OC, whether to upgrade to higher cat or to just convert it - until you need to book something or the OC is expiring - whichever comes first.

I have converted an old Travel Package into a new certificate (NC6) - are there any data points of partial refunds being available? - eg if we end up staying at a NC4 property?

Hoping to use it at the higher level, but (most likely) looking for a European property that is suitable for 2 adults + 2 children... which generally seem to be Cat 4/5

I see...so I missed the fact that travel package certificate upgrades are not allowed at all in the new world...well that blows big time.

Officially it is not allowed but a few have managed to get it done. It is exponentially more difficult once it is an NC so unless you have no other option do a conversion from OC to NC. Straight OC to NC conversions of course are explicitly allowed and I do not believe there is any system restriction preventing up conversions while going OC to NC so it is just a matter of finding an agent willing to process it. I suspect once you have an NC there are system restrictions which require a supervisor to manually process it which likely will not happen without an excellent reason, probably involving Marriott having made some mistake for which an argument could be made for them to make it right.

A data point for everyone. I had an OC9 booked last August and attached to a reservation that I never intended to use. Yesterday I called the US line (not UK) and asked for the agent to convert my OC9 to a NC5 (QP91 code) - this is because I have a Cat 5 hotel reservation that I will actually use for a week and wanted to get the 60K points back as well for going down to a Cat 5. I know this is the reverse of what most people are trying to do in getting a higher certificate. The agent on the phone said she would order me the QP91 - Cat 5 but ultimately ordered me a NC6 (QP99) which is technically the right conversion in their system. I got disconnected during that call unfortunately and it was processed. Note that prior I asked for the OC9 to be detached from the existing reservation - it was tricky as the agent kept wanting to cancel the reservation. You have to really repeat "detach!" and "don't cancel the existing reservation" as I understand from the thread that this will create a big mess.

I tried yesterday and today over several calls/hang ups for an agent willing to convert my NC6 to an NC5 and refund me the 60K points. Some are the agents are legacy SPG and have no idea about this and once they ask for help come back and tell you it's not possible. Finally found someone who got the OK from their supervisor to do so - it was incredibly complicated. They had trouble deleting the NC6 and then finally were able to do so and order me the QP91 - took 45m. In the end it all worked out. I got the 60K points back from downgrading (or rather "converting" as I put it). I also learned in the process that if an agent agrees to do it for you - ask them to open a case number and document it so it's on the record in case you get disconnected or they can't technically do it and you have to call back.

To a NC6? For additional points?

Not to ask repetitive questions, but it helps to see additional specific data points. And hopefully stops the same questions from being asked over and over again....

Upon conversion to new TP certificates, not only are upgrades/downgrades infinitely more difficult, but also cancellations to get back the residue/surrender points (45K for NC4, etc.) are infinitely more difficult (or even impossible).

I might have missed some data points here but how do you know that getting back the surrender points is infinitely more difficult?
