Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Whatever you have in mind, make sure you understand the implication with a reservation that has an OC attached. If it is an NC, it seems one can cancel and the cert comes right back, WITH THE SAME ORIGINAL DATE.

With an OC, good luck if you do something without first detach the cert.

I would appreciate your help as every single property I'm considering for my OC1-5 is going up to NC5.
You NEED to attach the cert before March 5th. No if or but or I want. The ONLY WAY to be able to use your current cert on the properties that go up in Cat, is to attach the cert before March 5th. Period.

If you book the room with cash, points or TP, the reservation is complete and is paid for. But if you only do a point advance booking, then you only hold the room and it is not paid. Then you'll have to pay for the room at the then current market rate.

Lesson learnt from the last August merge. You'll need to pay for the room or have the TP attached before any rate changes.

I wanted to redeem a Marriott CAT5 7 night TP for SPG property.
I called the customer service and the rep just made me a points advance reservation and told me to call after Mar 1st to attach the certificate to the reservation.
But she was not very sure that the system would be ready by then.(?!)

From reading some blog post around Aug 2018, I was under the impression that booking SPG property with Marriott TP cert would be possible after Aug 2018. Is that not the case? Thanks.

No, it is the case. The rep, as many today are, was wrong. HUCA. You need to have them convert your old cert to a new cert if you have not already and then they can attach it. The rep probably did not know how to convert the old cert to a new cert -- bad rep. It is definitely possible and you can do it today if you find a competent rep.

You get a refresh of the expiry date when you convert to a NC. Holding it as the OC until you need to convert allows you to maximise expiry time.

40 minutes and counting on the UK line for a simple OC --> NC conversion. Obviously I missed the combination of words that should have led me to immediately HUACA.

Have you got the conversion done eventually?

Is there any keyword I should say to get OC converted at least? I asked them to convert the package from OC to NC (and hopefully to keep the category by paying points difference), but it looks like the front line rep in UK has no idea with the conversion at all. After a long hold, the rep just came back and said that my package is for category 1-4 only now and asked me to call back when I am ready to book the hotel.

Is it easy to get it converted from OC to NC at least from US marriott support? Maybe it will be my backup plans

Eventually - at 50 minutes or so - although the agent converted the wrong certificate - instead of the one expiring in April he converted the one from July. And yes I had the same "when you're ready to book the hotel" garbage, although as it happens I was converting due to the category changes and needing to attach a certificate before that happens.

Ultimately I received two emails - cancelling the 830T and ordering a QP83 - so next time I'll try the script in the wiki and HUACA if the agent doesn't have a clue what I'm talking about.

Thanks for this info. Does the new cert have the expiration date updated to one year from now? I have tried the script in wiki but it doesn't work that well.

Also, did you tell them that the hotel you wanted to book is converting to new category so they agree to convert the certificate and attach it to the hotel? Or did you just convince them after 50 mins to convert the certificate only and not attach it to any reservation yet? I hope that I can be more prepared and get a better experience when I call them again. Thanks

In the past, Marriott will call Chase to get an approval to extend the credit card FN - it is handled totally differently from the TP which Marriott gets to decide all by itself whether to extend it or not - FN from credit card requires the bank's approval.

This.

There is a reason why it is in the Wiki. It it has proven working better, why reinvent the wheel?

I guess I have followed the script but it looks like the front line reps didn't get the idea at all. Somehow it seems like they do not know the conversion is needed in order to use the old travel cert without any "upgrade". Should I expect them to know and HUCA if they seem clueless about it? May be I have to ask the rep whether he/she knows about the TP conversion before continue?

I have always just clicked "1" (option for marriott rewards member) to connect to the representative after calling UK line. Start wondering whether I connect to the right people. Should I connect them in some other ways? Thanks
