Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.
When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).
The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen
Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.
1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.

The new award redemption chart will not impact Travel Packages. After these changes go into effect, you'll be able to book a hotel within the category assigned to your Travel Package, regardless of whether the dates at the hotel are in off-peak, standard or peak rates.

Expiring 7-night P830 Package
I have a P830 7-night old Cat 1-5 certificate that I got with a package in 2016. I extended the certificate last year and it expires on 12/28/2018. I should actually be able to use the 7-nights next year if I’m able to extend again.
I’ve tried to read this thread but am a bit confused. If I call and have the certificate converted to the new QP83, should it automatically extend the due date one year? Am I taking any risks by doing this - if the agent overrides the due date extension and makes the certificate expire on the original due date will I also lose the ability to receive 45,000 points from canceling the old certificate? In that case I won’t be able to use the certificate since it expires in 10 days and I’d miss out on 45,000 points.
Should I try to convert for the extension or just cancel for 45,000 points?

I have a NC6 that I would honestly rather turn into 165,000 pts. Been told by both US and UK lines that their system doesn't even give a cancellation option for the new partial certs. Has anyone accomplished this recently?

Later they attached it to my reservation while exchanging it. I guess they saw me wanting it to be used and not just extended, LOL. I ended up not being charged the extra 30,000 I was supposed to add for a OC8 -- NC6.

Personally I have seen many such a clauses in virtually every program, whether on revenue bookings or reward bookings.
You can just tell the OP that it is fine to leave early without a sarcastic comment first.

Youll get full credit for the 7 night stay compared to if you told them you were leaving on day 6. They’d check you out and you wouldn’t get 7 night credit towards elite status.
If you don’t care about the night credits or you feel bad they won’t be able to sell the room, then just tell them your ditching the last night.

Absolutely but don’t tell the hotel that. Put up a DND sign and just leave after your last night.
Youll get full credit for the 7 night stay compared to if you told them you were leaving on day 6. They’d check you out and you wouldn’t get 7 night credit towards elite status.
If you don’t care about the night credits or you feel bad they won’t be able to sell the room, then just tell them your ditching the last night.
Many hotels / jurisdictions require a periodic check to make sure that nothing illegal is going on in the room or that the guest is alive and well. Finding an empty room can raise alarm bells, or result in an automatic check-out. Best practice is to have a quiet word with management, to say that you want a base for the week, but might be coming and going.
Some other countries have fairly strict controls about the registration of foreign visitors. Just sneaking out of the hotel isn't always feasible or advisable.

Not sure where to ask but you guys might know - for current cat7's, future cat8's: if I make an award reservation with points advance now, will I be able to attach a cat7 certificate in January since I booked before they go up in cost or should I attach everything now since they'll be unavailable even for already-booked stays?

If this is an NC that you got in exchange for an OC, you might be able to call and ask if you can essentially change your conversion choice from an NC to the refund. I've not heard of anyone succeeding, but you might be persuasive enough.

Just as an update, I did manage to convince a UK rep to turn it back into 165k because it was converted from an old cert. It feels somewhat wasteful, but right now it's nearly enough points for 3 nights at soon-to-be Cat8 properties which would cost me more in cash than just paying for the Cat6 redemption I had planned out.
There are plenty nice NC6 properties.
