Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Cancelled an OC5 today that was attached to a reservation and the expiration date did NOT reset - it was the original one of Aug 1.

Applied to a NC4 and no fuss, took a few minutes.

Wonder if I can upgrade my other one ... but I don’t even really have anywhere I want to use it yet.

She did claim this was a one-time offer.

I gladly accepted the NC6 upgrade and my account now showed "Partial Package - 7 nights category 6". I hope that is all I need to do.

Then looking at Bali I saw no availability for any month I checked. Is this a Marriott loading problem, or a situation where they just don't offer award rooms?
No availability for cash as well or just award?

Must be ymmv. I did mine over the weekend and it was originally 4/1/19 and it was extended 1 year from issue (12/15/19)

Have OC1-5 successfully upgraded to new cat 5.
called UK first, gentleman really know what he’s doing as soon as I told him I have old certificate. Said no on upgrade only convert to 1-4.
called us platinum line got put on hold for 30min and I gave up
called uk again, lady picked up, basically she need to ask for everything, and 2 hold and 20 minute later I have an cat 5 LC hotel booked. Didn’t deduct any of my point which I thought was weird but nice.
Saw briefly partial package 5 was in my account, after booked hotel is gone.

1. I realized that the reservation is booked for one person. Actually there will be 2 of us plus a baby. What will be best way of correcting the occupancy without screwing up the TP cert?
2. To further complicate things, I'd like to change the reservation date by one day earlier if possible. Would that be even possible without converting the OC8 to NC6?

Thanks in advance!
Also, if you would like to arrive 1 day early, your best bet would be to simply book 1 extra day on points.

Nice! When I originally booked the tp it took a few days for the points to fully leave the account but maybe you got lucky.

What was the upgrade cost from old 1-5 to new cat 5?

That is because your rep BACKDATED your cert. My pre-merger OC6 was attached to a hotel reservation just 2 weeks before new charts were announced. Then the hotel went down one category when Marriott announced the new charts to become effective in August. I detached it, again pre-merger.

The rep took the trouble to Cancel the reissued, with extension of one year New Cert. then reissued another cert Backdated to the original date! I would not have known it had I not received the email with the cert number that was totally different from what was in effect.

That guy's action has created a ton of subsequent confusions when I converted the OC6 to NC4 (the one with an extra 30K in it, different code from the regular NC4).

I reported my experience before Aug 18 merger.

Your case is the 2nd DP we saw the cert can be backdated when a rep took it upon himself / herself, to enforce the no extension rule. System continues to allow new date generated. It is upon the rep on let it be or backdate it.

It may take an overnight before you see the deduction. Though usually you can tell from your account balance whether the additional 60K pts are deducted or not.

Too bad the average rep doesn't appear to show the same level of initiative elsewhere.

No kidding.

Though I suspect the reps who took upon themselves to make sure the certs remain the same expiration are operating in the assumption that if they dont, they would be reprimanded for not enforcing the rules. At least that is my gut feeling. Over the course of several months dealing with many reps, I have heard many times the reps claimed they could not do this and that, if they did it and being found out, they would be reprimanded. It boils down to, how fearful the rep is, for losing his job.

Ok, I called Sunday and Monday morning to the US line in SLC. They said system for Marriott Rewards was down, so nothing they could do.
Called Monday afternoon and no luck, agent said TP can not be upgraded from OC8 to NC6.
Called again on Monday evening to Spanish line, and they said I was out of luck, because if I wanted a new TP, I would have to pay over 400K and I would only be refunded 135,000 (they knew nothing, of course).
Decided to give it a shot Monday night, a couple minutes ago.Told really nice agent I had a TP and a reservation at Marriott Wailea Beach Maui for the end of the year. My TP was OC8 and wanted to attach it to that specific Cat 6 hotel, and that I had the 7 night reservation that is to start in less than 10 days.
She told me to hold, as she new NOTHING about TP exchange. She went to talk to manager (on hold for 10 minutes) who said was working on another system to convert it. She returns and tells me the Certificate was updated, attached and that I owe nothing (not even the 30,000 extra points), which it is still strange.
Logged in and reservation changed from 300,000 points to 165,000 plus resort fees and says rewards certificates will be sent to the hotel. It also says that the reservation has e certificates.
So will call hotel tomorrow to check that everything is OK.

Phone app updates very quickly (like real time). But online website is very slow to update. May take half a day.

Interesting. I'm not _too_ worried about it because I'm pretty certain I want to use it on these dates, but the second cert I have, I'd much prefer to upgrade it and extend it by a year - in a few months from now, not sure whether it will still be possible or not.

Anyone upgrade a 5-night cert btw?
