Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

cancel hotel booked with the old cat 1-5 certificate

Family has a last minute change for the holiday plan so I am forced to cancel the hotel I booked with the old category 1-5 certificate (7 nights), what is my option here -- will the certificate be re-issued instantly in the new category 4 (or under) type? or I'd better re-book the certificate to another hotel stay during the cancellation phone call to prevent it being lost?

Edit: I spent some time reading the posts, so is the follow the suggested approach
1. First "detach" the certificate before cancel the reservation, and it is said to call the Marriott help in UK. Anyone happen to know the the UK number? and how long this could take - instantly or a few days?
2. Then cancel the reservation myself online 'after' i saw the detached and re-issued new certificate in my account
3. Now the new certificate issued will be valid for another 12 month from the re-issue date, and I can either rebook to another marriott property (following the NC4 category) , or if I would need to go with spg property, I need to first book with SPG representative 'without' certificate attached and then call marriott representative to attach?

Is my understanding above correct? Please help and I am only a few days away before my allowed cancellation deadline.

BTW, 2 other related questions about searching hotel book-able using certificate.
1. Is it true that "only" those hotels shown as available after I choose "use points" can be attached with a certificate?
2. The allowed maximum persons per room is always 4 for NC4, higher number per room always require an upgrade?

Thanks again for your help!

If it's Tokyo Marriott you may or may not be able to move depending on the dates.
Thanks for all the responses. Yes, it's the Prince Sakura. So I guess I'll not change the date then.
But would it be a problem when we show up as 2 adults plus 1 infant?
I read someone said doing any modification will void the TP certificate. I'm not sure if fixing the number of occupants will trigger that too.
Thanks!

I've seen people say they did three adults there without issue even though the website won't let you book that. Give them an email at [email protected]. Their rates are ~1700 JPY higher per night for double occupancy. I don't think they will charge you anything to do two + infant on an award. Marriott phone agents should also be able to change the number of occupants but I would honestly just talk to the hotel because Marriott will probably give you incorrect information or find some way to mess something up.

Just turn up with 2. Won't be a problem

Less meddling with the reservation the better as it's gone up in category

Hi, I'm over from the BA part of the board, so please be gentle.

I've got a old Cat 8 TP, never had one before so not really up to speed on using it. We have a trip up coming to Florida, flying in and out of Miami, we had planned to split the time between Miami and Orlando (to keep the little one entertained), because of the split location I'd not previously considered using the TP, but as I'll not have much use for it between now and expiry I'm looking at shoe-horning it into use.

As there seems to be some good value in using the TP in Miami, I thought of the following (is this plausible) book a 7 night TP in Miami then leave after 4 or 5 days and just check out online on day 7, or just book for the 7 nights and disappear to Orlando for a night (maybe 2) in the middle of the week (we can leave suitcases etc.. to give some semblance of being there). I appreciate that these are 'bending' the rules, but does anyone have any experience or advice.

The trips in Feb next year (H, W & B7) 3 of us travelling

TIA

I wouldn't call it bending the rules. If you have reserved a room for seven nights it doesn't mean that you need to sleep in it all seven nights. So feel free to stay somewhere else for 2 nights. If the nights are in the middle of the trip you may even leave some luggage behind that you don't need for the excursion.

We had 2 adults + 2kids staying at Prince Sakura last year using 7 night Marriott TP without any problems. Our room has 2 double beds, and we requested a cot or crib and they provided without charge.

They likely are playing games with their inventory but rather than have you expose them to Corporate they may help you out on an individual basis (make an award reservation for you on your preferred dates) to prevent being outed.

Thank you both for your assistance! I simply emailed the property and asked very nicely if they’d book a points advance reservation for me - and voila! About 12 hours later I had a booking that I can attach my certificate to. Yay the misses was very happy. Good karma to you both!

I just wanted to share my DP calling to the US line today.

I had an old NC8 package and I called the platinum line to try my luck after realizing the UK line was already closed for the day. The lady on the phone, after putting me on hold for 5 minutes, came back and offered me either a NC5 with 35K points back or a new NC6 with 30K additional points directly. She did claim this was a one-time offer.

I gladly accepted the NC6 upgrade and my account now showed "Partial Package - 7 nights category 6". I hope that is all I need to do.

A one-time offer beats a nonexistent one. Hopefully, everyone is eventually allowed to change categories.

with 30k points, meaning you had to use 30k points to upgrade?

1. I realized that the reservation is booked for one person. Actually there will be 2 of us plus a baby. What will be best way of correcting the occupancy without screwing up the TP cert?
2. To further complicate things, I'd like to change the reservation date by one day earlier if possible. Would that be even possible without converting the OC8 to NC6?

Thanks in advance!
While it is true Japanese hotels usually charge more for a second guest (anywhere between 10-100% more), for an award it shouldn't make any difference if you are just 2 plus a baby.

In the USA a single room with 2 queens is OK for 4 adults, but in Thailand only 2 were permitted for our award room and we had to pay extra for our 14 year old son (about $30-40 a night I think), regardless of whether he used a roll-away bed or not.

That is good news about the one-time upgrade.

I am looking at using an old 1-5 (new 1-4) and there are very few choices in Hawaii, none in Japan. If I bump it up with extra points that will give me some more choices.

Then looking at Bali I saw no availability for any month I checked. Is this a Marriott loading problem, or a situation where they just don't offer award rooms?
