Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

MARRIOT UK: +44 20 7012 7312

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

(1) 150,000 points for 7 night(s)
(2) Points Advance: wait until you earn the points you need

I do not see where I am able to attach the certificate. Now, I have never used one in the past so may be it is just user error on my part but the Marriott agent said that this is the part of the booking process where I should be able to opt to apply the certificate. Was she right? If not, can you please point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.
Travel Package certificates have to be attached by a customer service representative, so you'll need to call.

Thanks for the clarification. I've never used one before. Oddly enough, the agent I talked to said that I should be able to do that online myself. I guess she was just as clueless as I was.

If the certificate is one of those annual ones you get through the credit card, or is given in response to a promotion ("stay twice, get a free night" sort of thing), you usually can attach it yourself on-line. Maybe that's what she was thinking of. That has not been the case with Travel Package nights, perhaps because the complexity of the Travel Packages. Maybe Marriott will allow it in the future once they get the transition finished.

That makes a lot of sense. She probably did think of the annual certificates and thought the same process applied to the Travel Package certificates. Thanks again!

Just booked a 7 night Cat.4 at Sheraton Taipei

1. Called Marriott 1-800-321-7396
2. Short waiting, told agent wanting to use partial travel cert (7 night Old Cat.1-5) for Sheraton Taipei
3. Agent fumbled for about 5 minutes to find the right hotel
4. Agent recognized that I have several certs, and went ahead
5. Award reservation was made after 15+ minutes due to some difficulty of computer system
6.Old Cert changed to New cert for Cat 1-4 took 20+ minutes
7. Attach cert to reservation another 20 minutes. Agent kept coming back to apologize for a dozen times throughout.
8. Received three emails: Order of new cert, award reservation, and cancellation of old cert, in that order
9. Reservation was for two persons, confirmation email showing only 1 guest. asked for correction, received new email still showed 1 guest. (This has happened in another cash reservation for 2 guests but email said 1 guest.)

Summary:
1. Marriott agent knows precisely what need be done, but total phone call after agent answered took near one hour.
2. Wanted to book for only six nights but was told I must book for 7 nights. I cannot volunteer reducing it to less than 7 nights. (So there must be a period of 7 nights award availability)
3. Reservation was for two guests but emails repeatedly show 1 guest.

Easiest way I’ve found for travel package.

Step 1: convert old certificates (which takes the longest) via legacy Marriott staff. Ask when you call or you will be wasting your time with legacy SPG staff as they don’t have access to the system to cancel and order new certs.

Step 2: for SPG properties, call legacy SPG staff and make a reservation without attaching a certificate or pulling the points.

Step 3: call legacy Marriott to attach step 1’s certificate to reservation in step 2.

Done it twice like this with step 2 and 3 less than 5 minutes each.

Has anyone (recently) successfully used a TP for a second guest without the cert holder being present?

Good plan, sadly don't have enough points to make booking for a week and no 'points advance' option with SPG. Had confirmation of receipt of complaint to CEOs office after two weeks, a further fortnight later am still awaiting further follow-up from his PA who was meant to be sorting things. Overall pretty unimpressed with Marriott. By comparison have had some excellent stays and customer service from IHG recently, so they're getting more of my business!

I did all three with legacy Marriott staff in one call. She knows all the right steps needed. The time wasted was mainly because of the slow system.

I think the best way is
1. Book a point stay at whatever hotel
2. Call Marriott

The points deducted from step 1. will automatically be returned to your account in step 2.

The second best way is just call Marriott and do all in one step.

I concur.

I had an old Cat 6 7-night TP certificate that I planned to use at a new Cat 5 hotel. To save the space, I made a points booking at that hotel during the change-over and just let everything sit until the chaos died down.

Earlier this week I decided to see if I could change the old 6 for a new 5, attach it to the existing points reservation, and get the 210K points I had paid for the points reservation returned to my account. I called Marriott, told the CSR what I wanted to do, and she did it in less than 10 minutes. The unused certificate has now disappeared from my account, the reservation now shows as a TP reservation, and the 210K points appeared back in my account within hours (maybe overnight?). Easy peasy.

This is only if you get a competent legacy Marriott staff to make it in one call. I haven’t (knock on wood) experienced as much grief with the merge but it was a task for me to convert and attach certs.

But didn't you have to pay an extra 30k since the old cat 6 doesn't map to the new cat 5?

I was finally able to cancel an attached OC8 and upgrade for 30,000 points to an unattached NC6 (QP99) through US Call Ctr. The call only took an hour and change.

The rep and supervisor both read me the policy that No Upgrades are allowed.a
I asked for an exception to the policy and made my strongest and most polite case for an exception. I was told NO.
Then, after I graciously gave up and said I would accept the NC5+30K, I was told YES they would sell me the upgrade.

The supervisor needed to call a support desk to process the transaction either way. The first support person declined the SUP's request; but the 2nd support person allowed it and directed them what to do. Fresh 12-month reset too.

Satisfied with outcome. Hopefully, my certificate Hell is over and I will find good use for my QP99. Thanks to everyone who provided guidance in this thread.

Any idea why new converted certificates show as 'Partial certificate'?

I called today to book the Prince Sakura in Tokyo with my 5n cat-6 certificate. Took over an hour, system wasnt allowing it, and the hotel had trouble to, agent kept saying that it is a Partial certificate and hotel was saying that certificate only worth 135k not 200k... anyways, at some point the agent put me on hold and talk to another team, and came back with the booking made, no idea what they did.

I'd always thought it was because it is only for the hotel night as you've already had the airline miles? I think a lot of reps get confused re points value to 'purchase' the cert vs what it can be redeemed for.
