Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Anyone had any luck with having them change to a better room? I have no status, but am willing to pay some $$ to upgrade.
why don't you reach out to the property?

+1. I thought it was 30,000, but if they agree to upgrade mine for 45,000, I will be more than happy to pay those 45,000 Points and just get my new TP Cat 6

Have a P870 PARTIAL PKG-CAT 6.

Asked to have it converted / downgraded, and the rep didn't know anything about that. Just called Marriott and the guy repeated that I could book a Cat 6 hotel. Is this a clueless rep?

Called again...got a rep who knew what they were going.

COnverted. New package showing, but not the 30,000 points she mentioned! Already logged out / logged in again. EDIT: They are there now.

Wonder what would have happened if I tried to book a (New) Cat 6 with the old package? Anyone try that?

My understanding was that the system just blocks it & that they have to be converted to be used?

Yep. So, once it is attached to a reservation, it does not show up on your activity page, I think, but you should be able to see something to the effect of "you have an e-certificate for this reservation" when you pull up the reservation. However, for unattached, it SHOULD show up on your activity page, but mine went missing completely, until I learned that SOMEHOW (and I have no idea how), it got attached to some random reservation I had in my upcoming trips - I definitely did not initiate this. You may want to check your upcoming trips and see if the same happened for you. The unfortunate part is that if so, and if it is attached to a reservation coming up soon, that means you will have to detached soon, so if you were hoping to wait until further out (for extension purposes) to convert to the NC, you might be forced into doing it sooner rather than later.

I have had a) travel packages go missing, b) reservations go missing (that I needed to use or cancel by late September but I could not see them and sometimes even Marriott could not see them), and c) hundreds of thousands of points go missing.

Not purposefully, but kind-of. Either a confused MR agent or a glitchy system seemed to have attached my unattached OC5 to a NC5 hotel reservation. It currently remains attached, though it is a reservation I do not intend to keep, but I am waiting to detach it until I have a bit more clear plan of use for the TP certificate. I realize that I'm going to basically get one-shot at upgrading this thing, and not certain if I really need the upgrade or not, so when I have a better idea how I want to use the TP certificate, I will either upgrade or not at that time.

I happened to mention this to my Ambassador (that the certificate category does not match up with the reservation's hotel category) and he seemed to think it would be fine and accepted at the hotel when I took that trip (we did not get into the fact that I do not intend to keep the reservation), but I have doubts that it would be such smooth-sailing if I just showed up and tried to use it. I would guess that Marriott would remove whatever additional points were necessary from my account, understandably so, and I wish to have more control over it, so I will detach it and either upgrade it or attach it to a copacetic reservation.

All of that said, it can be done (attach it to the NC of the same number).

Interesting. Only have two reservations -one a Points Advance and one a cash one - both just holding reservations until I can use TP and doesn't appear to be attached to either. Was getting so fed up I escalated things to Marriott CEO's office - after 14 days finally had a reply yesterday saying they'll sort Westin booking for me so wonder if they've pulled it into some sort of holding pen in the meantime. Won't be phoning the call centre just now anyway!

Just wanted to add a datapoint for a relatively smooth conversion and booking. I had a legacy Cat 6 cert. Called in and said I wanted to use it on a new Cat 4 property which I gave him the name and dates for.

He put me on hold immediately and I was afraid of what he might do, since we didn't discuss how the certificate would be converted. Other than the fact that he put me on hold for *40 MINUTES* without coming back to speak to me once, everything got converted as expected. About 25 minutes into the hold I got an e-mail confirming the cancellation of the 870T and my account was up 75K points. 10 minutes later another e-mail came showing the purchase of a QP83 for 45K points.

Only issue was that when I got off hold, I got reconnected to a new agent and not the original one. But since the cert had been converted correctly, it was painless to attach the cert (it was to a Four Points - which as per the Wiki has been converted over to the Marriott system, which presumably was why it was easy for him to do)

Sorry if this has all been covered but I am struggling to search the thread for some reason.

Anyway, I have an OC8 which got moved to a NC5. From my reading, are my options as follows:

a) Call Marriott take the NC5 and recieve a 45k point refund.
b) Call Marriott and upgrade to a NC6 for 45k points
c) Attempt to attach my OC cert to one of the NC bands

Is this all correct and my only options? If anyone could help/clarify it would be greatly appriciated!
