Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Still working out the certificate conversion points value. But now my reservation has posted where the certificate was used, and it's even weirder. At the time i booked it said 210,000 pts (35,000*6 for a cat 5). I had her on the phone doing the conversion and she told me to book it and she would apply the certification. But now my reservation lists 35,000 points per night with a total of 135,0000 points, not 210,000 points. Should I be concerned about this? If I click "order reward certificate for this reservation", it says I can upgrade from the 135,000 points to the 210,000 points and they will deduct 75,000 more points from my points balance. It almost sounds to me like I wasn't given credit for a full 7 days with the certificate.

Question What to do with certificate

Hi all. I have been preoccupied with planning my daughters wedding and have been totally off the miles/points/travel grid for a while. I have a Marriott 7 night certificate that I need to use. What is the scoop? Does it still have value? I'm not sure what all has changed since they merged.

Thanks for the help!!!

I have a question for those of you who have used a 7 night certificate before. Historically speaking (i.e., pre-merger), has it been possible to attach a certificate to an existing award reservation that was booked with points? If so, how does Marriott handle a situation where the existing award reservation is for an upgraded room? Do they apply the certificate and then refund the points you originally paid for the reservation minus the point difference between the standard room price and the upgraded room price?

The reason I ask: I booked a 7 night stay for an upgraded room at an SPG property using points. I want to attach my 7 night certificate to this reservation, but it's supposedly not possible right now since we can only use the certificates for legacy Marriott packages. However, my trip isn't until next April, so I'm hoping that things will get sorted out before then and I'll be able to apply my certificate to this existing reservation.

Read back. Similar scenario has been asked and answer no more than a few days ago right on this thread.

All it matters is the total of the points shown on the Certificate Booking - it should equal to the Surrender Value, NOT the daily rate x 6 because the hotel portion of the Travel Package is a PARTIAL CERT, with the other component has already gone to the airline miles.

Honestly if people just spend some time and really READ the thread, even newbies on Travel Package would have understood how these certs work.

I would just wait because eventually SPG properties would all migrate to the Marriott booking platform, There is even a tentative timetable posted in this forum if not on this thread. Since you dont need it until April, chances are very good the migration would be completed before then. You would then be able to use the cert on the SPG property.

Is there any news on cat7 packages yet? I'm currently sitting on a 5 night cat 5 package that I want to upgrade to 5 night cat 7, but all the agents I've talked to say cat 7 doesn't exist yet and cat 6 is the highest they can upgrade to.

The problem with these multi-page threads is that it's off-putting and very time-consuming to have to read through 30 or more pages to find the answer, so it's easier to just ask the question again.

The wiki at the top of the thread can be very helpful if it includes a "Dick and Jane" explanation of how to navigate the new process. Happy, you and MasterGeek seem to understand the process best. If you have a chance (and the time) it would be very valuable if you could explain it in the wiki. We'd all be very grateful.

Following up on this, I haven't found a way to search for a word just within the thread you are reading. If you really want people to go back 30+ pages and read them all, the navigation has to be better. For example, someone told me to "look above" for a UK phone number, and I spent 25 minutes scrolling and trying to search and never found it. I have no idea where there isn't a very obvious "search this thread for X".

Thank you for listening.

the "search this thread" feature is available in the desktop version of Flyertalk. The desktop bersion can be enabled on most smartphone browsers. .

When someone is answering a question for the first time it's ok, maybe even fun for the answerer. But when the same question is asked ober and over, it is less fun to answer.

Interesting, there is a menu bar that shows it, but it only appears for me a fraction of the time. Even when it shows up it disappears if I try to use it. Frankly I have a very hard time with this site because it loads so slowly with all the ads. I would rather pay money for no ads. Is that an option?

What I don't quite understand is why there are no issues using Ritz certificates for free nights at any SPG property but we still can't use the travel packages at the same SPG properties. The IT computer integration doesn't make sense in this context. In both cases you're using a Marriott legacy certificate that has been converted to a new certificate type and you're booking at an SPG property.

No, the information you are seeking, is no more than 3 to 4 pages back from where you post your questions.

If 25 min reading would be a waste of your time, then I can guarantee you that me and several other posters who have answers many times of the same questions,

1) only learn the answers by READING numerous Data Points, then come to the conclusions on how things would be done.

2) to reach that knowledge level we who have provided lots of helps on this thread has used up many times more of the 25 min you spent looking for the UK number which has been mentioned numerous times AND, guess what, a few seconds of Google search would find you that information.

3) we who have answered the same questions so many times have reached the tipping point - because, guess what, our time is valuable too.

Thanks a lot for this new info

Is that SPG property bookable on Marriott website or it is still only bookable on SPG booking platform?

How does the reservation show online? Similar way as a Marriott 7 nights booking?

It is also very time consuming for me and MasterGeek as well as ms321 and skimthetree, just to name a few, to keep answer the same questions again and again as well.

Our time is valuable, too.
