Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, Ive copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: Theres a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: Points Advance Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart. Weve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they dont have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

When you move a cert to another reservation, the procedure seems to be
1) detach the cert.
2) if it is an OC, it needs to be converted to a NC before it can be used again.
3) attach the NC to the new reservation.

Each step should generate a confirmation email.
1) and 2) related to the cert movements.
3) related to the reservation now has an eCert attached.

All should be done on the same phone call that should not take more than 10 to 15 min if that much, even by competent US based reps. And yes, they should happen when you were still on the phone with the rep,

If by tomorrow you still see the cert being available and the new reservation still has not had a new cert attached, then the rep has not finished the job.

I dont believe today has any difference because the system has been allowing the bookings for well over 10 days by now. Look back on what were posted on this thread, many have gone thru the conversion whether from a stand alone OC, or from an attached OC. So the ability to do the jobs have been in the system long before today - it is more a matter of having a competent rep to do the job than anything else.
Those are the three steps I asked her to do and she said she did. However, I didn't receive emails for any of them. Still not seeing the cert attached to the new reservation. Only change is no cert attached to initial reservation. Sounds like I will be back on the phone.

1 hour 10 minutes into the process attempting to do so. Started with Marriott, transferred to SPG, and now transferred to Marriott Corporate (1-800-328-6242 was the number I was given if I'm disconnected).

Same same. I called the number from Australia which seems to be the office in SE Asia, upgraded the old OC8 950T to the current NC 6 QP99, for 30k points.

I tried to adjust an old Cat 9 hotel which didn't have e-cert attached before, now showing 60k points instead of 45k points, but the CSR said the system can't do it yet or wouldn't allow it at the time of the call. Reservation is in December so still some time to go.

Corporate (1-800-328-6242) said try again next month, application of the travel package is "greyed out" on the Starwood side at present.

On the phone as we speak to Marriott UK (Ireland) speaking about Travel Packages....

The agent who is really nice and doing everything she can (and is knowledgeable) stated that a memo has been sent round stating that these packages cannot be upgraded and Marriott has come down rather strictly to them. Currently on hold using one of the TPs on a Cat 4 and will post any updates I have.

FYI, hold times were approx 25 minutes.

Marriott has shown how hostile and greedy it can in dealing with its customers who were loyal enough to Marriott to collect huge enough balances to redeem for travel packages.

to Marriott for their anti-customer position.

Agreed, and lets hope they will pay the price and people show what they think with their wallet and moving brands. I do miss SPG already and having to deal with Marriott post merger is such a stark contrast.

I'm 1 hour in at the moment and on hold for a supervisor to see if there is anything that can be done. I'm only pushing as when I purchased the TPs, I was advised by the CSR to just purchase the cheapest one, wait for this to all blow over (the merger) and upgrade. Worst case, I think I have the time/date of that call so I would always request a subject access request and escalate this, IF I can be bothered.

WOW, what can I say. The agent I spoke to really did restore my faith in Marriott, knowing that there are a few good eggs in there after all! Clearly wanting to get this done for me, she spoke to a supervisor and bam. 60,000 points later, I now have a NC 7 Night 1-5 with an expiry date of 1 year from today.

I also took the chance to speak to her about my UK SPG Amex free night (if you spent 25,000 in 1 year, you gained a free night reward for weekend stays up to a certain category (that I forgot. And yes, to those in the US, 25,000 spend a 1 free night limited to certain days, that's the UK credit card game for you). Anyway, that mapped across when I linked my accounts to a NC 1-4 free night up to 25,000 points. She agreed to cancel it and deposit my point.

To those of you talking about worms and cheese, after spending an hour reading this entire thread and getting more and more anxious that there was no cheese, I am certainly full this morning!

So despite the memo from Marriott it seems if escalated to the right person and for the right reason, they can and will upgrade. I did not want to push for a higher category at this time.

I think this got asked a couple of times and didn't get answered, but are the 5-night certificates eligible for upgrade?

Called US SPG. Agent unfamiliar with TPs. She took some time talking to supervisor and determined cannot yet use TP for SPG properties. Must wait for IT integration.

Detach (OC) Only?

Has anyone attempted to ONLY detach an OC certificate? I need to cancel a stay (no later than tomorrow) with an OC attached to it but would like to wait to convert it to an NC in the hope I can bleed just a few more weeks of validity out of it (would like to use it in Oct 2019). Thinking if I can just get it detached, I can wait a few weeks before calling back in to have it converted so it can be reattached.

Currently on vacation in Europe. I'd like to call Marriott to try and deal with my Tier 1-3 cert. Anyone have a good number for me to try? Thanks.

Im a little confused - what higher category would you have pushed for? NC8 doesnt exist until 2019?

Or was the NC7 a typo?

I believe no one on the thread yet has been able to confirm the existence of an NC7 package (even if your package is a 5 night pkg), so this is a big data point if you did upgrade to NC7. From which category did you upgrade for 60k points?

I believe he or she was referring to a 7-night NC 5 and not a NC 7. The reference to 60,000 points may mean that the poster upgraded a OC 1-5 to a NC 5 for that amount.
