Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Thank you for the reply!

Does anyone know if a NC can be extended if it is attached to a reservation?

Well just had my first attempt to attach a TC to an existing reservation. As expected it did not go as I would of hoped.

I have an OC7 (P880) and tried to attach and use points to upgrade it to the OC9. Like everyone else, I was told that we would be able to add points to the cert if I needed to in the future. That was a no go with the US line today. I know I’ll be able to get accommodations in Rome but this is making me nervous nonetheless. Airfare for my 9 yr old and myself EWR to Rome has already been purchased and the hotel rervationa were made in August. Thankfully the trip is not till the end of July, it seems like I am going to need all that time to get this sorted out.

I don’t understand why the cant just pull the transcripts from my previous calls and even when I made the reservation and subsequently changed the date of reservation after the Sept 18 date.

You need to ask to convert OC7 P880 to NC6 QP99
You can't convert an OC to an OC, you have to move to the new coding from what I understand.

Reporting DP.

During the last two weeks, among five different calls, all to US elite numbers.

1) OC6 -> anything other than NC4 has been denied;
2) Front line agents all have no problem detaching OC6 from existing reservations;
3) They all called some back end agents to perform conversion to NC4 and attached to a reservations;
4) Attach to reservations has been hit and miss; That was the impetus to multiple calls;
5) During all the missed attachments, somehow, one of old OC6 is now missing-in-action. The only way to see it (for the agents) is to refer to the cert number. It is not displaying on the web site;
That OC6 cert was not part of any action. I believe, one of the back-end agent tried to attached it directly to a reservation by mistake;
6) Each call was easily 1 hour affair. Completely waste of my time and two agents' time. MPG can do better than this mess.

Had a reservation with an attached OC6.

Followed Happy's procedure:
1. Call 801-468-4000
2. Said "transfer rewards points"
3. Said "something else"
4. Said "representative"
Waited 5 minutes.
Told representative to do the following:
1. DETACH OC6 (870T) from reservation and (do not cancel reservation)
2. Cancel OC6 (870T) and 75,000 points go back to my account
3. Create NC4 (QP83) and take 45,000 points out of my account
4. Attach NC4 to my current reservation.

SO, this worked and took about 15 minutes with representative who answered the phone doing it all.
She did refer to some manual to confirm procedure.

Received email from Marriott Rewards re: cancelled award order confirmation
Received email from Starwood Preferred Guest confirming my reservation.

Checked online Marriott account:
1. New certificate was attached.
2. Showed points cost of 7 nights reservation as 45,000 (was 300,000 before process began then after OC6 was detached it became 150,000)
3. The 30,000 points refund has not yet showed up in my account but she said she saw it on her screen. Checked 1 hour later - 30k points are there.

As Happy had said months ago......DO NOT CANCEL RESERVATION - YOU NEED TO DETACH OC FIRST.

Thank you so much for this info. I need to convert a certificate. I’m confused though by all of the lingo/verbiage. What does OC and NC mean?

OC9 to NC7 is technically possible, for 150K. Not sure about NC6 to NC7, my guess is you won't find an agent willing/able to do it.

Sorry to hear your poor experiences. Though would like to point out that, the Elite number is not what it used to be.
Plenty of people just calling either the regular numbers, AND the all important UK number. Most folks get far better results with far less time and frustration than your experiences.
Since Oct or Nov, calls no longer take an hour long in the most part, to get things done correctly - ESPECIALLY the customer knows the procedures, able to lead the agent in the process - far easier that way to get one's wish fulfilled.

Hint - if the agent sounds unknowledgeable, and unwilling, HUCA. HUCA Try the UK number - which is listed in the Wiki. Open desktop mode in case you only use mobile device to access FT. Otherwise you wont see the Wiki or dont even know such handy, very useful area exists, right on the top of the thread, and indicated so in front of the listing of a thread if a wiki exists for that thread.
Use the collective wisdom that becomes the information in the Wiki to your benefits.

How is it 150K? It should be 90K.

OC9 was based on 45K x 6 (1 day free) = 270K value.
NC7 is based on 60K x 6 (1 day free) = 360K value.

If NC6 (which one can obtain by converting the legacy OC9 Cert and has a value of 50K x 6 = 300K) can be converted to an NC7 then the upcharge would be 60K but as you pointed out that may not be allowed in the system.

OC9 7 night package cost 390K
OC Tier 4-5 7 night package (which is the only OC that maps to NC7) cost 540k

540K - 390K = 150K
