Points sharing - new limit and exceptions?
hi all,
On the marriott page, it seems that the new point sharing limit is 100k. I attempted to transfer some points to a family member, but was limited to doing only 50k, as apparently while the transfer out limit is 100k, any one person can only receive 50k points. Is that the correct interpretation of the new rule/limit? Also, i know that in the past the limit could be exceeded. Has anyone been successful with this lately? pre-merger I was told systems are down...post-merger i've yet to see a successful report. Thanks |
so if you wanted to give your wife 100K...
could you give 50K to your wife....then 50K to your son.... and then your son could give 50K to your wife ??... that way she gets the 100K ?? |

Sharing Marriott/SPG points
I thought I remember you used to be able to share marriott points with a family member not living at your address for a fee? Is this not an option anymore under the new program? It's possible it's right in front of my face - but for some reason it's taking me awhile to get used to these new sites :p

Check out https://www.marriott.com/loyalty/redeem.mi and look at the very bottom of the web page under "Share Your Points".

Point Transfer
I am REALLY upset now. You can now only transfer 50,000 points a year. That's right a 50k limit on point transfers and a $10 charge. For someone with an SPG AMEX card, that is absurd! Why should the gods at Marriott care if I transfer 200K points to a family member in the same household? Lurker, can we look into how to change this or where I need to start calling?

Prior to the Merger you could transfer as much as you wanted in your household with SPG but it looks like that benefit is gone and now transfers are capped at 50k per YEAR!
Only way around is multiple accounts but they don't necessarily need to be in the same household. Here are the terms for sharing: 2.8 Transferring Points from One Account to Another 2.8.a. In accordance with the conditions for transferring Points as described in Section 1.6.c. Members can transfer up to a maximum of 50,000 Points per calendar year between any two accounts in good standing that have each been open for at least sixty (60) days, whether sending or receiving Points. I believe the key words are "between any two accounts". So for example one could do this to get points to a primary account: Cousin 1 has a balance of 75,000 Cousin 1 can transfer 50,000 to Cousin 2 (the primary account) Cousin 1 can transfer 25,000 to Cousin 4 Cousin 4 can transfer 25,000 to Cousin 2 (the primary account) Since no transfer is exceeding 50,000 between any "two" accounts this would be allowable under the terms and conditions. |
I thought you were limited to one (outgoing) transfer per year.
Also the limit has been changed to 100K pts. Share your pointsNow you can share your points with any other member.
Transfer 1,000 points or more—up to a maximum of 100,000 points per year—for a transaction fee of just US$10. Gold Elite, Platinum Elite and Platinum Premier Elite members transfer for free. Just contact Member Support at (801) 468-4000 to start sharing. |
As whatever the highest level is for this fantastic new corporation, the maximum points permitted for transfer is 50,000. Considering that I transferred 50k+ a month to different family accounts that is enough reason for me to not use my SPG AMEX and move to another card and hotel. That is a sad commentary for someone with Lifetime status and millions of points.
