I will echo this sentiment. Prior to the SPG-Marriott merger I had never stayed in a lower-end Marriott property, preferring to use Hyatt Place or other properties if a higher end SPG wasn't available. But this summer I stayed at my first Fairfield Inn (a new build Fairfield) and was surprised at how nice and efficient it was, for a great price. Since then I have also stayed at my first Courtyards (one was bad, one was better). From now on I'll probably be working Fairfields and Courtyards into my travel routine if they have good reviews and are convenient.

Former Fairfield in Fairborn OH, suburb of Dayton is now a Clarion Inn
500 Paramount Place , Fairborn, OH, 45324

The staff were always very nice but the facility would be more of a Sleep Inn in my limited understanding of he Choice Hotels Hierarchy.

This seems like it was a strategy for a while in midsized towns. Plant the FI and maybe an RI next to an 80s-style suburban mall. At least I know I've stayed in a few across the midwest in towns...many closer to Sioux City size than OKC size.

It seems like the health of the hotel probably tracks fairly closely with the health of the mall.
