African Pride 15 On Orange Hotel, Autograph Collection

Thanks for the update. I do hope this will help deal with some of the inconsistencies caused by some but not all of the Protea properties being rebranded as Marriotts. My not-favourite is the former Balalaika now being pushed as the Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton. Some mouthful.

'Complimentary breakfast as a Marriott Gold, sir?' 'No, we're not a Marriott, we're a Protea. And as an independent franchisee, we're not bound by Marriott corporate decisions.' Hardly encouraging when Marriott corporate have already announced certain benefits including complimentary breakfast for golds will soon be part of the Protea offer in Africa.

"Protea by Marriott" does not equal "Marriott," just as "Courtyard by Marriott" does not equal "Marriott."

Protea Hotel Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton is branded as Protea. It is not one of the five African Pride Hotels, and will not move under the Autograph Collection brand. It will remain Protea.

Until August, Protea does not provide a lounge/breakfast benefit benefit to any level of Elite guests. (Only 5 of Marriott's 19 legacy brands currently provide the Elite lounge/breakfast benefit .)

That will change in August. Protea (along with MOXY, Courtyard, and AC Hotels) will offer daily breakfast as a Platinum welcome gift option. And Platinum will be the new Gold.

It's true that it's a Protea-branded property, not a Marriott Hotels-branded property. But the hotel is mistaken about not being bound by Marriott corporate decisions. Franchisees are required to comply with brand standards. In this case, however, the hotel was complying.

Hello, Horace. I did not quote your message because it states nothing new though adds possible confusion with your comment about Courtyard by Marriott. I was illustrating some of the confusion that exists in Marriott/Protea branding.

Courtyard by Marriott is being rebranded as Courtyard. Presumably not in South Africa where the Courtyard brand is currently operated by the same group as City Lodge.

And I still think that 'Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton' is a rotten name for the oldest hotel in Sandton.

I had hoped to clear up the confusion that there are "inconsistencies caused by some but not all of the Protea properties being rebranded as Marriotts."

Five African Pride hotels have been moved from the Protea brand the Autograph Collection brand.

Protea (full name Protea Hotels by Marriott) remains a separate brand. It's one of 30 brands of Marriott International.

Courtyard by Marriott has a new logo, but it's still Courtyard by Marriott: Business Hotel | Courtyard by Marriott

A thread on FlyerTalk mistakenly asserted that "by Marriott" had been dropped from Courtyard by Marriott. There are cases when the logos of some Marriott brands (such as Fairfield and Courtyard) are used without "by Marriott," especially on "wallpaper" or when "by Marriott" would be unreadably small. But that doesn't mean the brand itself has been "rebranded."

That's not the name on the official website for this hotel. Please click on the link in my earlier post.
