Good hotels and expensive hotels tend to have higher Categories because they have higher perceived value for redemption which leads to higher redemption rates.

SPG uses some measure of room revenue, not an attempt to measure quality.

Although the Marriott LAX is pretty easy to get a LNF rate on ...

WOW Nacho. Nothing could be further from my experience. Although a year ago, and 50+ checkins since, the greeting from Mette at the front desk was memorable for all the right reasons, cheerful, knowledgeable and helpful I was upgraded to exec floor with river view even though I was on an ultra-cheapo advance purchase rate. Mette was there throughout my 3 night stay and her demeanour didn't slip once! Easily one of the best FD I've experienced at Marriott...

I donít recall I saw any friendly FD. All of them seem not wanting to bother. At check out the FD supervisor asked me how my stay was. When I started talking he doesnít bother to listen. You should check the most recent posts about CPH Marriott. Another FTer told me that his stay was bad too. I did it for my mattress run, which wasnít cheap. Paid 900DKK and I was treated like I got the room for free.

Back to the topic, I do often see some FTers score lnfs for lax marriott. No need to burn 30k points there.

Except for when I need it on 3/17/14 for one night!

That's St. Patrick's Day.

VickiSoCal Jan 28, 14 11:20 pm

Is there some reason the Marriott at LAX should be experiencing high demand on St. Patrick's Day?

Why are we even discussing the category of the Marriott LAX? Who would stay there over the Ren LAX?

I would have thought that the Marriott category would be based on some definition of average room revenue per night. It would be easy to get occupancy rates up by lowering prices.

I once encountered a revenue manager for a (managed) Marriott hotel who mentioned to me that properties are reimbursed on a rate that's a relatively low percentage of the trailing 12 month average rate and the categorisations start to change depending on how much money corporate has to reimburse the hotels for redemptions. Hence we get the situations where you can find luxury properties at Cat 5 in Asia, but you have a Cat 7 average European property.

The LAX Marriott gets a lot of conferences. It might be booked due to one of those.

I agree that the Ren LAX is a nicer option at LAX, but some do get good LNFs at Marriott so understand that cropping up (but of course LNF is irrelevant to Cat).

The 'why is X property Y category' comes up all the time on certain properties. Why doesn't really matter - it is what it is.

Cheers.

Points are simply another form of currency. A higher-priced hotel is not necessarily better than a lower-priced one. At the end of the day, supply and demand always rules.

I guess you don't realise because the downgraded list is small compared to the ones that are going up :D

I guess the new devaluation should be up in a couple of weeks.

That's my go to in that area. Nice hotel, close to the airport and you can walk to/from Hertz if you are so motivated to shorten the length of a car rental.

CLG Jan 6, 16 2:23 pm

Looks like I'm reviving an old thread...

Would anyone change their opinions over the last few years? Need an overnight stay and 5 day parking package, and the Hilton & Marriott are exactly the same rates. Will check the Ren now, too.

Thx,
CLG
