That would depend on your tolerance for train speeds. Katata Station is a stop for both the JR West Shinkaisoku, and Ltd. Exp. Thunderbird (during commuting hours in one direction).

We stayed here last week.Really enjoyed the place as well as giving me hope that not all is wrong with the merger.
First the room.
We had been upgraded to an onsen room on the top floor of rooms.
We love these Japanese rooms with the shower and tub in their own separate space. The onsen was great to soak in at the end of the day.The only problem is that it is continually running. We could not have slept with that noise. You have to ring to get it turned off then back on.
Great views over lake Biwa and the mountains. But there was some evidence of typhoon Jebi.

It is a refurbished old hotel. The lobby, restaurant and our room at least have been done well.
The lobby bar in the second picture is used as the lounge. So happy hour from 1730-1930.Two hot dishes each night and seem to rotate at this time from Takoyaki and chicken wings to rice balls and pork in brown gravy.Wine the first night was a choice of a sparkling and 2 whites and 2 reds.Nice Chilean wines. On the other 2 nights just the sparkling and a keg from one side a rough red emerged and from the other an even worse white.
So some pics.

Plat breakfast was in the restaurant.A big but pleasant area.
There is also an egg station where you get eggs virtually any way and including eggs Benedict.
We did have a car and it was easy, though slow to drive around the area. Unfortunately it rained the 2 full days we were there so we will have to return but happy to do so.

Stayed a couple nights recently. Full due to Go Travel, so no suite or onsen room. Got a nice sized king upgrade on 8th floor with lake view. Lounge in lobby is nice, decor a lot like Shirahama Marriott. Happy hour has a bento-like box which is good. No cocktails or bubbly like Shirahama, but some sake. Pool is 25m, warm and nice. Fitness closed. Public bath OK, but nothing special. Good buffet breakfast on 12th floor. No plat gift offered (unlike Shirahama). I doubt I can claim anything given the COVID exceptions I read about.
For anyone visiting, I highly recommend renting a car (or bikes) and making your way to Omihachiman. Canals and mountaintop views are great. Plus there is La Collina (cake shop/factory) which reminded us of Hobbiton in New Zealand.
