I found this link to an FAQ regarding Design Hotels on their web site.
One of the items there is:
"Will Design Hotels™ member hotels that are SPG Partner Hotels offer SPG Member benefits on Partner Stays?
All SPG Members are eligible to receive the following benefits during a Partner Stay at a Design Hotels™ member hotel that is an SPG Member Hotel: free in-room internet and one free bottle of water per guest per day.
Gold Preferred Guest and Platinum Preferred Guests will automatically receive Starpoints as their elite welcome gift – 250 Starpoints for Gold Preferred Guests and 500 Starpoints for Platinum Preferred Guests per Partner Stay.
No other elite benefits will be offered including room upgrades, guaranteed late check-out, Suite Night Awards and Your24."
I hope this helps.

I'll be traveling to Budapest early of March and were debating this property over the other property but it seems like we will be getting minimal benefits therefore has put off the plan to stay there...

Many Design Hotels seem to allow guests to "buy up" to a rate that includes breakfast. This means that you get the buffet breakfast for a small discount, but you must precommit to take the breakfast no later than check in for the entire stay.
Some will upgrade SPG elites and give late checkouts, but this is above and beyond so YMMV.
The published benefits are exactly what our Lurker posted above.

Regret staying at this property last week.
- underwhelming Design Hotels property, with nothing cutting edge about it IMHO
- assigned room similar to Aloft, basic would be the key word here
- clueless, poorly-groomed staff, with poor service levels overall
- missing stay which will require followup with SPG research desk

In all regards this is a poor and underwhelming property. The only thing going for it is the low number points required for a free night.
The rooms are basic (think mix between an aloft and four points). One positive is the location is great for going up to the old town of buda (you have elevators right next to the hotel). Breakfast is ok but charged 13€ per person, no upgrades otherwise.
What put me off here was the staff were absolutely unfriendly. I noticed a lady trying to check-in at noon just to be told to come back at 2PM because it wasn't time yet (no explanation as to why). I was given a warning because I left the room keys in the room and didn't bring them back to reception and because one of the guests in a room left without telling them. I saw other staff actively doing their best to avoid customers or any interaction with them.
Overall service wise and room wise this place isn't up to what other design properties offer. I'd say stay at a Marriott property in Budapest.

Staying there now. Will report back after stay. Wecome receptions extremely gruff, seemed put out to have guests. No recognition of platinum status of appreciation for us having booked rooms at this hotel. Location is good but rooms like student accommodation. Edit- just checked category and reminded that it is a Cat 2, costing only 4000 points per night. Could be a higher Cat with some work.
Edit - update. So spent 3 nights there. After a gruff reception and no mention of SPG status, later interactions with the staff were very pleasant. The hotel is in a quiet part of town but Pest can be accessed by a bit of a walk or on the trams. Those wanting more action should stay on the other side of town. Meals I the hotel are reasonably priced. The rooms are not fancy. The strangest thing is the shower, which is most a shower head extension in a bath without a shower curtain. For an older person it could be quite dangerous using and getting out of that high and slippery bath. Would I stay there again? No, I don't think so. The place needs upgrading. A point of contention for me though is that if SPG want me to visit Design hotels they need to get those hotels to recognize status benefits, time to align policies across the portfolio.

Has anyone stayed here recently? Above reviews are pretty lousy. It's a Cat 4. Seems weird that (according to website verbiage) that it won an award yet seems to have a very basic design (based on reviews here). This may be a case where it's better to go w/ the full-service properties:
