Like other Chinese services, they don't really care if a non-Chinese find it inconvenient.
In China now there are so many services that require real-name authentication which requires the Chinese National ID.
The only way I could get it sorted was set it up at the airport.

I'm finding that I can't create a China Eastern account either... the whole page fails at the "security verification" step, where I enter the captcha. It keeps telling me "Security validation error, please verify.". I've tried it on both Firefox and Chrome, so I'm not sure it's a browser issue... anyone know how to do this?

Hi CIT85,
You must have an active membership in both the SPG Programme and the ‘Eastern Miles’ Programme in order to link your accounts and start earning benefits.

IVe gotten points when booking through Expedia; however, it seems the plane has to be MU operated. I flew a couple weeks ago from Thailand to China on what I booked as a MU flight. The flight ended up being run by Thai.
I got lounge access but no points and Thai Airlines never got my MU number when booking via Expedia (as MU always seems to get). So I guess MU flights operated by another airline don’t get SPG points even if booked as MU. Or maybe it does but thebautems were not integrated this time. I might have a flight to London soon on another MU booking that might be operated by another carrier - deciding whether to take that or Etihad.
