W Miami (downtown) [Master Thread]

Well this was unexpected. Viceroy Miami is the W as of today. Category 6.

Didn't expect this. Irony is this was the site of the former Sheraton Biscayne Bay.

This was also the site of the Colin Kapernick sex scandal (although the NFL qb was ultimately exonerated).

Interesting and seemed to be very under the radar. I wonder if this will confuse people due to the W South Beach. Actually kind of surprised it's not under the Tribute banner but then again they probably lost the right to use the Viceroy name.

I thought there was already a W in Miami but now I see that it's officially the W South Beach. It's too bad this one can't be the W at the Viceroy. IIRC W Minneapolis is officially "at the Foshay".

It's been the W South Beach for some time, if I recall. Viceroy is its own boutique chain--so that was out. Especially given the sale of the property closed yesterday and the Qataris immediately handed over the keys to Starwood. Suggests to me that this was in the works for some time.

Either way, a pleasant surprise.

I agree but it would have been a nicer surprise if it had been a Cat. 5!

Why not cat 1 if we're being picky!

A nice pick-up for SPG and an appropriate addition to the W portfolio. This is a very well located hotel in downtown Miami in the very popular Brickell area. The Mandarin Oriental is just a stone's throw walk across the key. The vibe is definitely W.

There already will be a new Tribute Portfolio property, the Colonnade (formerly Westin at the Colonnade), not 10-15 min drive south, where I've stayed numerous times as a Westin. It reflags in Oct.

IIRC The Royal Palm in Miami Beach is also Tribute Portfolio.

Isn't the Colonnade in Coral Gables or something, not Miami or Miami Beach?

The Westin is a "Westin" not a Tribute. Yes the property is in Coral Gables

Is there something that states the Westin Coral Gables is now a Tribute property?

This article implies a October 2016 date:

It is technically in Coral Gables, though it's just 15 min drive from downtown Miami (and 10 min north of true Coral Gables and the U of Miami, as well as 10 min from Coconut Grove.)

I was also responding to the suggestion that the Viceroy should be a Tribute rather than W.
