Starwood Lurker is Out of Office

I am leaving tonight in just a few minutes and will be gone until next Tuesday around Noon Central time.

Have a nice weekend, pray that I do not get selected for jury duty on Monday, and Hook'em Horns!

Sincerely,

William,

Re: Jury duty:

You need to go ALWAYS on the Friday before a Monday holiday (or a Thursday before a Monday holiday if they don't empanel juries on a Friday, like in DC). Think Fridays before Presidents' Days, Columbus Days, Memorial Days, etc. I went today in DC and was dismissed in 2 hours. Don't tell anyone else.

Will

Luker:

I think this trick works every time. Report to courthouse wearing a nice business suit. Carry a briefcase and start reading the Wall Street Journal. Very few defense lawyers would want you in the jury box.

Or say that in your spare time you're a Jury Nullification activist.

don't they know who you are? (and how many people you can't help when you aren't around.) that should count for something.

I like my trick better. After the defense and prosecution attorneys spoke to the pool and asked if we had any questions, I just put up my hand in the dumbest voice I could and said, "Uh... so the defendent... he's the guilty one?".

Defense attorneys wanted the whole pool thrown out after that was said.

I know I'll be in the minority here, but I do believe that you haven't really completed your civic duty until you've actually served on a jury.

Don't make up excuses for getting out of serving on a jury. It is important that smart and capable people serve on juries rather than just the people who don't believe that they are too important to waste their time on it.

On topic: We look forward to your return, William.

Having served on four juries in the past 30 years, I agree with Lensman.

I hope the proponents of jury avoidance strategies never have to sit in the defendants' chair being judged by their peers... peers whose idea of reading is the "Weekly World News."

Hardly! If what you're suggesting is the case, the vast majority of defendants would exercise their right to waive the jury and have a trial by judge.
