I just want to again warn others at how awful this hotel really is. The resort fee for platinum members is insulting. The room finishes are 2* hotel worthy. Plat recognition is non existent. Casino is depressing. Water wasn’t even hot. Either I was downgraded from a SNA (and they lied) or they lie about square footage. If you’ve been to the SLS Miami, take that but post zombie apocalypse. Staff was nice enough, I could generally see the embarrassment on their faces with a general look of defeat. Immediately after checking I went and got a room down the strip and gave this one to some friends since I couldn’t cancel for a refund. On top of that, the location really sucks and while that’s not their fault it would help mitigate everything else....come to think of it, if you’re thinking about booking this, don’t and instead book Jockey Club.

Don't expect that SPG status will get you too much in Vegas. It's not that kind of town.
Is this your first time in Vegas? Are you there on vacation? If the answer to both of those questions is yes, I would strongly recommend ignoring SPG for your stay and staying somewhere on the Strip (Las Vegas Blvd South) between the Mandalay Bay and the Wynn. There are lots of options at all price points. The Strip is where you'll want to spend most of your time anyway so it's much easier to be centrally located and be able to walk around.

No lounge at the Westin either.

FYI, I booked 3 rooms at the SLS once and had a mediocre experience too. I also booked a room at Treasure Island for $34.98 per night plus taxes and resort fee at TI - much more centrally located and no added cost (except resort fee) for parking. Ended up in a Tower Suite and treated much better there with no status than at the SLS as a Platinum.

Its not my first time in LV. I travel once a year. Until now I only stayed at Resort Hotels like Encore, Mirage or Planet Hollywood, but I thought as Plat it would be cool to book a SPG Hotel. I see, its not a good idea

This is a funky hotel- especially the suites. I have stayed here before and really don't care for these suites. I just
had a stay in a regular king room, and was pleasantly surprised. Gone were the gaudy furniture and the mirrors on
the ceiling. I consider this last stay the best I've had at this property. I enjoy the burger place and the breakfast. For
me the location on the monorail is important (and handy) for my 3 days of conference at the convention center. I would certainly stay somewhere else if my wife decided to go- but Vegas is not her kind of place. Let's face it, we all want the stays, nights and points everywhere we go.

The SLS/W used to be the Sahara Hotel and Casino. Built in 1952. Room sizes and oddities are due to being built in the early 50s and doing cheap updates to the rooms rather than a total makeover including reducing the number of rooms (square footage of rooms is very small ... think 1950s).
While the Westin isn't great, it's miles better than SLS/W. Better yet, just stay at a property along the strip.

Change of Ownership
For those unaware, the SLS has recently changed ownership. The new owner, Alex Meruelo from Reno, is planning to pour $100 million into renovations over the next few years, and is hinting at possibly renaming it back to the Sahara in a year or so. It's not mentioned whether it will stay part of Starwood/Marriott, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't leave the chain at some point in the near future, since his other property is not part of Marriott. He also owns the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno (which originally was the MGM Grand Reno). The SLS/W has never made a profit, was being sued by it's original Chinese investors, and was on the verge of bankruptcy.
I actually like this hotel and hope that this new owner will be successful turning it around.

The Lucky Dragon Hotel and Casino (meant to cater to Asians) was built brand new, opening late 2016. It's now in bankruptcy, less than a block from SLS.
Resorts World, a >$7 Billion project scheduled to open in 2020 and a couple of blocks south of SLS, may be able to make it, but they're also on the fringe of the strip. I don't give Resorts World any better odds than one can get at the roulette wheel.

The suites in the World Tower have the white/chrome color scheme and are more modern without the same level of funk as the Story Tower. I stayed for more than one night and they let me change between the towers - mainly because of suite availability the various nights, but also just to check out the various vibes. I will say, I enjoyed the all yellow tile shower more than I thought I would!

Looks like the new owner wants to remodel the casino floor and 1 of the towers in the hotel. He’s also possibly thinking of putting a recording studio on the property.
