My favorite is the one ending in 33, which as a corner has tons of windows and has minimal noise from other guests. Several of the rooms on the club floor are tiny, so my standing comment is "01/02/32/33 room (Garden St. View) for upgrade please." The two-room suites (x01, for example) are nice, but I actually prefer the one bigger room.

The property treats Platinums very well, as while the Service Promise was in effect was extremely fastidious about proactively enforcing it.

My only comment about this property is that it is, indeed, quirky. It's unlike most any other Sheraton left these days and comes from an earlier era. 20 years ago, there were many more like it under national branding, these days it's a rare breed.

I have considerable difficulty deciding if I like this hotel or not. It has some definite plusses (location is ideal) and some real drawbacks (odd rooms, confining infrastructure). I guess I'm more a fan of modern than I realized. With the Westin Copley across the Chuck River, I'm much happier.

All that said, if one has a reason to simply be in Cambridge, the Sheraton Commander will do just fine.

The staff is awesome! I called the desk inquiring about the heat. They turned it on and gave me 1,000 points for the inconvenience!

Also, IMHO they've got one of the best wine lists around!

The staff is great and they have some interesting rooms (I was once upgraded to a 2-bedroom suite, and I think those canopy beds are.. umm... unique). The hotel is OLD, though, and I found the street noise to be quite bothersome. I could actually feel the building vibrating when buses and trucks would drive by.

First time I ever went to Boston to visit colleges my mom and I stayed at this hotel. It's not that we didn't like it, it's that we liked the Inn at Harvard more. So we checked out and checked in down the street

The Inn at Harvard has TINY rooms and no real upgrades for Diamonds. If you have no status with either hotel chain, the Inn at Harvard is better, although then I'd consider the Doubletree at MIT unless you really need to be in Harvard Square.

Just never stay for any reason at the Sheraton in Lexington, as it is a pit.

I kind of like the quirk. The Westin IMHO has really no character. It's just a big tall building with hotel rooms. I like the roullette-like surprise of walking into the Commander, not really knowing what you might get. Also have to agree the staff are very good, apologetic if there are two or more people in line at the desk.

When cash and points are in play, it is an excellent value for this hotel.

Trip Report - April 2006

This will brief for now but I am most pleased with this hotel. The staff is all around EXCELLENT. I have a room on the 26th floor facing the Charles River and a great view. I'll post more later, but so far this is a hotel who really does seem to "get it."

You must be staying at the Westin Copley and not at the Sheraton Commander (unless they sneaked in quite a tower when I wasn't looking).

Hmmm.. That's weird. I would've sworn the place maybe just had 6 or 7 floors with no views of the river. Oh well.... :D

Flat Screen TVs at Commander

Now playing:
For those researching the property. FYI, sometime in 1Q08 it appears that they installed flat-screen TV's in all the guest rooms at the Commander.

Coming soon:
I stayed here back in Feb and some guys were installing Wi-Fi equipment in the hallway outside my room. Or at least that's what they claimed to be doing. However, as of last week not operational.

Yes, they now have flat screens, though in the suites they seem to have 1 flat screen and 1 old-style CRT.

Depending on where you happen to be sitting and how good your WiFi card is, in my experience you can often find an open network at this Sheraton.

I used 40000 points for a five night stay last week. Reservation in order despite late arrival, room set aside (but no upgrade). Staff was friendly but sluggish. Corridor hall was musty. Elevators were slow. Room was dreary, immaculate. Convenient to my meeting. For the rack rate or points spent, hence a higher expectation, I was disappointed.

I wouldn't object to staying there again if others were paying, but this wouldn't be my choice for my own expenditures.

Sylvia
