Niagara Falls is boom and bust, moreso than most cities. If it's a quiet weekend in town, with few events, you've got a much better chance. A quick scan of the parking lot on your way in may give a good indication.

I've stayed three times as an SPG Gold, booking the cheapest available rate (once BRG), and each time had a nice upgrade. None of these was in a busy time of year, but at least once it was a weekend. Once I ended up in a western end room, distant view of the Horseshoe falls, and twice in a high-floor room facing the American falls, a great view. The Gold recognition has been pretty consistent in my experience, the upgrade was proactively offered each time, so good luck! Please report back with your experience.

Casino package a good deal
Just stayed here with the casino package. It was 20 bucks more than the lowest available rate and you get 2x25 dollar slot vouchers. All you have to do is run the credits once through a machine and you can cash out. We weren't lucky so cashed out only 48.50,but that is still equivalent to almost 30 bucks off the lowest room rate. Only thing to be aware of is that one person can only use one voucher per day so if there aren't two of you you would have to go back the next day.

I'm curious about any recent reports on the platinum upgrade situation here? They used to be really good with this but the last few times I stayed the front desk staff just straight out lied about the availability and also refused more than a 1pm checkout - even though the hotel was wide open the next day.

I was always refused a late check out pass 5 pm.
Don't forget they have the $9.95 nightly resort and do not provide lounge access to platinums

About to book the 249 CAD rate for Friday before Memorial Day to get the Deluxe Falls View high floor room, instead of booking the 10K pts option for a traditional room and risking not getting upgraded.
Is the room type worth it?

Myself, I'm fine with whatever room during non-winter months as I'll spend so much time out of the room. (Niagara Falls Park on the US side, Niagara on the Lake, Wineries, etc...). In the winter, when I'll be spending alot of time relaxing in the room, I want the view.

I'm with Flews. How much time will you spend in the room? You'll get a good view of the Falls, especially lit up at night, but it might not be worth the $$$ to you.

A drive up the hill (away from the Falls) will eventually put you into residential neighborhoods with free street parking. Granted, you'll have a minimum of a 15 minute walk back down to the property, but it's free.
