Seclusion Day Information: March 21, 2015 and March 9, 2016

Nyepi, known as the “Day of Silence,” marks the celebration of the Balinese New Year in the Hindu Lunar calendar. A spectacular procedure of ceremonies, parades of great bamboo monsters, and fireworks occur on the Eve of Nyepi, followed by a day of total silence and seclusion. The community strongly believes that if the island is silent and dark, the bad spirits will leave and the new year will start in peace. During Nyepi, from 6am until 6am the next day, the island stops. Nobody is allowed in the streets, use of electricity is restricted, and the international airport is closed.

In 2015, Nyepi will fall on Saturday, March 21 and Wednesday, March 9 in 2016. Please note that check-in and check-out will not be possible on Nyepi Day, and Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) will be closed. Some of the resort facilities will operate as usual; however, there will be no transportation services to and from the resort, and televisions will not be available. Lights will be dimmed inside and there will be no outdoor lighting. Our pools and garden areas will still be accessible except for the beach. Only indoor seating will be available at Arwana Restaurant. Cascade Bar and Sapphire bar will close at 6pm. Kul Kul Bar will remain closed.

We kindly invite you to respect this sacred day and observe these restrictions. Normal activity in Bali will resume at 6am on Sunday, March 22, 2015 and Thursday, March 10 in 2016.

Decent stay in December

Had a decent stay Dec 1-4...lost 2 days because volcano stranded us in Australia.

Suite was very spacious...living room, dining room and bedroom. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Grounds were wonderful...pools clean, gardens well cared for. Beach smells terrible during low tide but is very nice during high tide.

Breakfast was decent...good variety. Chose this as my platinum welcome gift.

As others have said, the hotel is obviously older and hallways/common areas especially could use updating. They are dark and musty smelling.

Fitness center was nice, didn't use the spa.

Transfer to airport was about $20USD via metered taxi.

The "security checks" are just a show...they have a metal detector set up for entry into the hotel lobby, but only at night, and you can walk right around it and no one stops you. The "car check" didn't occur when we first arrived, either. The guard just waved us through. Interesting that the even both with the charade.

Happy to answer questions for anyone headed over for a winter break. There are a few areas for improvement, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back and would certainly choose this property over the Westin right next door (based on what I saw walking around the Westin property)

Question Access

Hi, SW Lurker. When I book a room at this property how can I tell which rooms give you lounge access?

I don't think they have a lounge any longer. Past posts in this thread seem to indicate they used to have one, but shut it down.

They definitely don't have a lounge. I was there in December. Breakfast was the Plat amenity offered, and it turned out to be a good value. There aren't many places around there to get food otherwise (though we ended up finding a place that would deliver lunch/dinner. And of course you can go to the Bali Collection for dinner).

We are staying at The Laguna for 7 nights as part of our Honeymoon in Mid-Late October before going to a Villa in Ubud for a couple of days and on to Tokyo/Disney/Hakone for 10 Nights. Does anyone have any local tips?

We've been visiting the Laguna 2/3 times a year over the past few years. You can often get good rates using the Z[3456]R codes and we've often booked a suite for around US$200-250++ per night. The resort never seems to upgrade us .

Tips include asking for a top floor room to avoid noise and musty smells. Dine at the Melia hotel next door in their restaurant area overlook the sea. Food is OK, location is great. They also do a happy hour in the bar there from 5-7pm buy one get one free. They also do nice peanuts. There is nightly (?) live music which ranges from awful to excellent. We dined once at the Laguna beach restaurant and had a great steak with a lovely bottle of wine...all at a hefty price, of course. It's a fish restaurant but has some meat course on the a la carte. The main restaurant seems to do nightly buffets but often looks very empty.

Further along the beach (to the right after Melia) you turn right at the police station then up a dark path for a few 100 yards, then left after the theatre to get to Bali Collection where there are lots of small, cheaper restaurants. We generally eat at the Bebek (Duck) place - on the left look out for wooden ducks on a rock at the front of the restaurant. Quality here and most places in Bali Collection is so so but prices much cheaper than the hotels. The Bebek place is one of the few without loud music and they do an OK Nasi Goreng.

My wife is a fan of the Laguna SPA and Platinum members get a 20% off voucher for the first treatment. Plats (maybe all SPG members) also get 20% off dining costs....but not breakfast costs.

At least in the past, there was a free shuttle bus to/from the Bali Collection shopping mall.

As of December 2015, there is still a free shuttle bus. You can also walk fairly quickly.

If you want to order in instead of going out but don't want room service, Nusa Dua pizza will deliver for free to the hotel. We ordered pizza and sandwiches from them a few times (needed a break from local cuisine on occasion!). It is not super high quality, but is cheap and easy. We called via skype and although the English wasn't great, they got our order right every time.

If you're looking for a good off-property spa, check out Jari Menari. One of the Virgin Australia flight attendants told us about it. It is FANTASTIC, very reasonably priced, cheap, very very clean, and they will pick you up and drop you off. We went twice and wished we had gone more.

I just looked it up and it looks amazing. We'll be in the area later this year - thanks for the tip.
