T&Cs re: 24-month points expiration:

http://www.marriott.com/marriott-rew.../expiration.mi

”1.6.d. Points Expiration Policy. Members must remain active in the Loyalty Program to retain Points they accumulate. If a Member Account is inactive for twenty-four (24) consecutive months, that Member Account will forfeit all accumulated Points. Members can remain active in the Loyalty Program and retain accumulated Points by earning Points or Miles, redeeming Points, or purchasing Points (as described in 2.9) in the Loyalty Program at least once every twenty-four (24) months, all subject to the exceptions described below. If a Member does not maintain an active status for five (5) consecutive years, the Member’s Account may be deactivated. Once Points are forfeited, the Points cannot be reinstated, but a Member can earn new Points, unless that Member’s Account has been deactivated.

i. Not all Points activities help maintain active status in the Loyalty Program. Examples of activities that do not count toward maintaining an active status in the Loyalty Program include, but are not limited to:
A. Gifting or transferring Points; however, converting Points to Miles or Miles to Points does count toward maintaining an active status;
B. Receiving Points as a gift or transfer

ii. Awards redeemed by a Member prior to Point forfeiture are still valid even though the Award may not yet have been fulfilled at the time of Point forfeiture. However, if those Awards are cancelled after the Points expiration date, those Points are still subject to forfeiture. For example, if a Member redeems Points for an Award Redemption Stay that occurs after the Points expiration date, and then cancels the reservation prior to arrival without having completed any qualifying activity to extend the expiration date, those Points will expire.

iii. The Points expiration policy does not currently affect Points in a Lifetime Elite Membership Account; however, the Loyalty Program may choose to apply a Points expiration policy to Lifetime Elite Membership Accounts in the future.

Note : Points expiration was paused until Dec 31 2022. As of Jan 2023, points expiration was reinstated.

Did you extend Marriott Bonvoy® Points Expiration?
To provide you ample time to redeem Marriott Bonvoy® Points, the expiration of Points was paused until December 31, 2022. At that time, your Marriott Bonvoy® Points will only expire if your Account has been inactive for at least 24 months.

Same here but my account activity says this:
"We're sorry, but your points expired on 02/28/2019. Our records show no account activity for at least 24 months. If you believe we missed something, please contact customer support."

I'm not sure how it expired in 2019 when we are still in 2018.

This is what I have as well. Will they change the expiration date based on SPG stays or not?

My SPG account shows an expiration of 2/28/2019. I have the SPG AMEX with monthly spending and a recent stay in August. Marriott side appears correct based on my August stay, showing an expiration of 8/26/2020. System is still messed up.

According to the Marriott website you have to "make a stay (or redemption)..." which I read as the stay has to occur and not just be booked and later cancelled. Given the timeframe you have to work within, I would suggest purchase a few points and be done with it. Of course, this is presuming you do not have LT status from either side of the house, in which case combining accounts may solve your issue.

How about this situation? Marriott account - lifetime platinum; SPG account - basic member. I understand the points in the Marriott account are not subject to expiration because of the lifetime status, but what about the points in the SPG account? Does the lifetime Marriott status "protect" the points in the SPG account? If I'm reading my account in the SPG app correctly, my platinum status (from the Marriott account) is recognized but not clear if the lifetime/no points expiration is.

I'd be surprised if anyone knows the answer to that. Why wouldn't you just combine your accounts if the points in your SPG account are close to expiring?

I had 50,000 SPG points that were converted to 150,000 points after the merge.

Last activity was Nov 2017, an "Internal SPG point transfer". Before that, I've had another transfer within the last 24 months, but no other activity. I didn't have a Marriott account from before the merge, so no activity there.

With the new rules, points expire after 24 months, but transfers do not count. So I'm confused; when will my points expire?

- 24 months after my last (now ineligible) activity in Nov 2017?
- 12 months after the Nov 2017 activity, as per the rules for that activity?
- 24 months after the merge in Aug 2018?
- At any point, since according to current rules, I have no qualifying activity during the last 24 months?

Hi mx2,

We would suggest you to call customer engagement center to check your Points expiration date.

Easiest, fastest and most reliable way is the purchase of 1,000 points for USD 12.50. It is also quite inexpensive.

Dining credit (outside of a hotel stay) was an SPG thing. It is not a Marriott thing.

DINE: EARN POINTS.
Earn points across all brands on your room rate and incidentals that can be charged to your room, such as dining and spa services.
