”1.6.d. Points Expiration Policy. Members must remain active in the Loyalty Program to retain Points they accumulate. If a Member Account is inactive for twenty-four (24) consecutive months, that Member Account will forfeit all accumulated Points. Members can remain active in the Loyalty Program and retain accumulated Points by earning Points or Miles, redeeming Points, or purchasing Points (as described in 2.9) in the Loyalty Program at least once every twenty-four (24) months, all subject to the exceptions described below. If a Member does not maintain an active status for five (5) consecutive years, the Member’s Account may be deactivated. Once Points are forfeited, the Points cannot be reinstated, but a Member can earn new Points, unless that Member’s Account has been deactivated.

i. Not all Points activities help maintain active status in the Loyalty Program. Examples of activities that do not count toward maintaining an active status in the Loyalty Program include, but are not limited to:
A. Gifting or transferring Points; however, converting Points to Miles or Miles to Points does count toward maintaining an active status;
B. Receiving Points as a gift or transfer

ii. Awards redeemed by a Member prior to Point forfeiture are still valid even though the Award may not yet have been fulfilled at the time of Point forfeiture. However, if those Awards are cancelled after the Points expiration date, those Points are still subject to forfeiture. For example, if a Member redeems Points for an Award Redemption Stay that occurs after the Points expiration date, and then cancels the reservation prior to arrival without having completed any qualifying activity to extend the expiration date, those Points will expire.

iii. The Points expiration policy does not currently affect Points in a Lifetime Elite Membership Account; however, the Loyalty Program may choose to apply a Points expiration policy to Lifetime Elite Membership Accounts in the future.

Note : Points expiration was paused until Dec 31 2022. As of Jan 2023, points expiration was reinstated.

To provide you ample time to redeem Marriott Bonvoy® Points, the expiration of Points was paused until December 31, 2022. At that time, your Marriott Bonvoy® Points will only expire if your Account has been inactive for at least 24 months.

Expiring points for Marriott - recommendations?

I have 38k Marriott points that are expiring in June. I don't have any plans to book a hotel between now and then. I'm leaning towards transferring them 3:1 to SW or 3:11 to UA. I fly both. Are there better options out there?

Consider the Marriott Bonvoy Bold credit card from Chase:

Here is a few ideas:
1. Marriott Benvoy has recently signed up forDining for Miles so if you purchase something it will show as activity.
As far as I know Martiott does NOT count social media post activity but does allow dining for miles which is simply linking your credit card to MB account then using it at a partner.
2. AMEX Platinum credit card ---- bumps you to GOLD status which allows you keep your miles.

Marriott rep told me(not sure she is right) that once GOLD elite status your pants will NEVER expire.
I signed up fro AMEX Plat ($550.00/yr AF) in Sept 2019...and was Marriott Benvoy Gold by Oct 2019.
But I found a different comment about Gold status:
"Marriott Bonvoy: Once you earn elite status, it will be valid for the rest of the calendar year in which you've earned it and an additional 14 months after that.

So those are my two hints.

Can you clarify if elite status allows lifetime points from expiring which a Marriott employee wrote to me in an email stating?

OR
IS this applicable and teh MB employee is misinformed?
"Marriott Bonvoy: Once you earn elite status, it will be valid for the rest of the calendar year in which you've earned it and an additional 14 months after that.
I became GOLD elite in Oct 2019...so am I lifetime of expiring Feb 2021 or when Amex card is canceled?

Eligible Cardholders will keep their Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status as long as they have an active American Express Platinum Credit Card.

Sad ------ I have three emails from a Marriott Rep where I challenged her knowledge and suspected the AMEX card had to remain open.

And what is worse is the Loyalty program people are terrible never answering my questions since they play games asking numerous security questions.
I suspected teh AMEX card had to remain open and didn't qualify lifetime but that si what Marriott Benvoy stated in emails.

Could you please post specific contract language that explains this as clearly the Marriott Benvoy has been confused on the issues.

I also cannot get confirmation that dining for miles at a marriott partner will reset an account so points will not expire.
Social media activity is NOT valid, nor is BONUS activity.......but again Marriot Benvoy seems not to specifically written this to know what is allowed for resetting account activity toward point expiration.

Since the issue is applicable for ALL AMEX Platinum personal card members there is no need to get my account number.

Seems Marriott Bonvoy is confused amongst several employees as it does not seem to be well documented which is probably why you haven't posted the rules.
It is also not well documented that Dining for Miles with MB which creates account activity qualifies for resetting the expiration points date. I assume it does and only social media activity btu bonus point adjustment activity appears t not allow account expiration resetting also.

ALL AMEX Plat personal card holder are automatically given MB GOLD status so now its in your court to prove your statement about when points expire by referencing the specific documentation.

Once again Marriott Bonvoy in writing has already told me once GOLD your points will never expire. You seem to disagree with this comment but don't post anything to support your conclusion.

You may view the terms and conditions on this page. It states that "You will maintain Gold Elite Status without meeting otherwise required Marriott Bonvoy criteria as long as you remain an eligible American Express Card Member or until American Express notifies you that the benefit is terminated."

Earning Points through Dining for Miles will help maintain active status in the loyalty program, while earning Points from social media programs, such as #MarriottBonvoyPoints does not.

This was in my account. "Don't let your points expire. Stay with us or use your Points to keep your account active." I have 2 Free Night Award Certificates that expire January of 2022. Will my account expire as well as points thereby losing the 2 free nights? I understand the points will expire. I don't have that many points anyway so I don't mind losing them.

Welcome to Flyertalk.
The points can no longer expire before March 31, 2022, so that's after these free night awards expire. You've got until then to generate some activity in your account if you do want to keep those points.

Free Night Awards: Members who had a Free Night Award (FNA) that had an original expiration date in 2020, or which will expire before January 2, 2022, as part of their Cobrand Credit Card Benefit, Annual Choice Benefit, promotions or travel package will now be able to redeem it through January 3, 2022. Free Night Awards with an original expiration date prior to 2020 will not be eligible for the additional extension.
Points Expiration: To provide you ample time to redeem Marriott Bonvoy® Points,

Expiry of Marriott Points

Sitting on a large balance of Bonvoy in 2 accounts - 1 Platinum and active and the other no status and mostly inactive now
When we stay, we tend to stay and use points on the Platinum account
The other is a holdover from sharing points at SPG times to allow airline points transfer to both our arline accounts

I notice that redeeming points for rooms in the nonstatus account does not reset the expiry clock in the account
There is no credit card linked to it
I tried sharing points to and from the account but it did not reset the clock on expiry
Other than staying at a Marriott, is there any way to reset expiry of points ?
