If your choices are Ritz Kapalua or one of the JWs in Thailand the only reason to choose Thailand would be the exotic locale. The Ritz is by far better in every possible way. The JW Phuket is only comfortable if you stay in a suite and as others have written it's in a remote location with very little food options outside of the hotel. The hotel food is average to good, but nothing when compared to the Ritz.
Basically you have the choice of luxury or location. If you want a relaxing luxurious honeymoon go to Maui. If you want an exotic honeymoon in a faraway land ( :) ) then take a suite at the JW Phuket. Interesting.. It is my understanding that if you use points at the Ritz you will not be upgraded. I want it to be a nice room so thats why I am thinking Phuket. Which is the preferable resort in Phuket?? |

Can someone explain the Category 7 travel package?
That seems intriguing... Travel packages use a qty of MR points to yield a 7 consecutive night stay at one property and a qty of airline miles. They are an exceptional value, because the MR point-mile conversion is 1:1 in most cases. In January, my wife and i are in Phuket for two weeks. I used travel packages and got to biz class tickets from JFK-HKT on Cathay Pacific. It was a lot of points, but we are getting a great deal of value. The "category 7" part refers to the hotel category for the 7 night stay. I wrote a pretty comprehensive blog entry on using TP's on a Marriott board. http://www.rewards-insiders.marriott...ckage-overview |
So I would use the 300k or so points and also get miles in the same point total?
Looking at JW Marriott In Phuket, I think one of the resorts is a cat 6. |
I wouldn't do a 10+ hour time change to Asia for a honeymoon.

Whatever you do I recommend you GO BIG! Spend money/points that are more than you think you should. You only get married once (sometimes) so do it right!

However, for FTers who have never flown around the world before, I suggest thinking hard about the idea of giving up the 1st day of your honeymoon, being dead tired (probably) for a day, then giving up the last day of your honeymoon and being dead tired again. |
However the OP said they've done Caribbean and Hawaii so if they want to go farther overseas then good on them, pick a romantic place.
Cheers |
Italy is always an option too.
https://www.marriott.com/hotel-search/italy.hotels/ I'm sure there's a FT thread on it, just don't have time to look it up. |
Thanks for all of the help so far. This has been great.
Since we are going for roughly two weeks we are willing to go that far so I am not too worried about the time change. Which JW marriott is better for platinum upgrades? Definitely will be platinum and I have read about all of the great upgrades Platinum's have received. Any recent experiences would be great to hear. I was leaning towards Khao Lak as it is quieter and I heard the breakfast that is complimentary for platinums is great as well as the free happy hour. Anything else I am missing about the JW Phuket or the JW Khao Lak>? |

Wow the Renaissance Phuket Villas look incredible. Looks like you can book straight into a villa with points. Incredible..
Any free amentities with being platinum at Renaissance Phuket? |
I have narrowed it down to the Ren and Khao Lak. Which one would be better for upgrades. Maybe we should split it 5 nights and 5 nights? It will all be on points so I am trying to see the best upgrade I can get. I love the look of the oceanfront villas at the Ren? Is this a possible upgrade? They seem very accomodating from what I have read.
