My experience upgrading on honeymoon as a platinum member is 0/1.
Probably won't have any more data points to add, ever. |

Hello,
I will be staying at the Renaissance Arc de Triomphe in Paris & the Riveria Marriott La Porte de Monaco in april for my honeymoon. I have seen posts where people have been able to email the hotel GM's to request upgrades. is this ever successful and if so how do i find out who to contact. Thanks, |
It really depends on a lot of factors. April is a busy time in Paris! First and foremost, do you have any status with Marriott? Without at least Gold, I would venture your chances are slims. Now some silvers have mentioned being upgraded on occassion, but it is very rare. It will also depend on how occupied the hotels are and how many suites the hotels you are planning on staying at have. When in April are you going? If you going during the two traditional Spring Break weeks for the US April 16 - April 29, the hotels could be very crowded and scoring an upgrade may be difficult. Are you paying for the stay or using points (this one shouldn't matter, but it can sometimes make a difference).
Taking all the above into consideration, email the GM and explain your situation. He/she probably won't be able to guarantee anything, but it can't hurt. As a Plat., I have had success a few times when requesting a nice upgrade due to special occassion when traveling with my family on leisure. But I will say, dude its your friggin Honeymoon, and it should be a once in a lifetime experience. If you want a suite, and don't want to be disappointed, splurge and pay for it. That way, you know what your are going to get! Good luck and congrats, RIP... |
Honeymoon recommendations wanted
We have about 250,000 points and are planning to use them for our honeymoon in October/November. Our dates are somewhat flexible. What is the best resort value? We are looking at Aruba, St. Kitts and Belize but are concerned about the mixed reviews. Italy is also an option but we hoped to find more first-hand accounts to help us narrow down our choices. We don't need sand but are coming from NC so we'd rather it be a little warm and don't want a terribly long flight. Also, what are your thoughts on the value of the all inclusive upgrade offers?
Thanks in advance for your help! |

I reccomend Aruba ^ - fantastic island, lots to do, Have stayed at Renaissance, MVCI Ocean club plus visited Surf Club and JW Stellaris
|
Somewhere in Hawaii... maybe Ritz on Maui!?
|
I see you mention Italy. There aren't any "honeymoon" hotels I would recommend in Italy w/ Marriott. Except Grand Hotel Flora in Rome. This woudl be a great honeymoon place to visit- Rome.
Did you look at Spain w/ Marriott? There are some good coastal properties. Not sure if you have any SPG points but *wood is much better south of Germany in my opinion for point redeeming hotels. Congrats! WT |
ukswift88- did you notice the smoke smell everyone talks about at the Stellaris? Of the Aruba properties, which do you think is the best? What was there to do in Aruba?
SacTownGuy- we think the travel time to Hawaii from NC is just too much. Any alternate suggestions? Wingtipflyer1- Rome is a nice idea. We hadn't thought about Spain but will check it out. Thanks for the advice! |
If in Oct/Nov, I would nix St Kitts just because of Hurricane risk.
You can add Curacao since it is next to Aruba and outside of the Hurricane. I have been to both and Curacao is definitely more international and a lot different for Aruba. We went to Aruba for our honeymoon and it was nice. Also been to Grand Cayman twice and though the Marriott is more of a hotel than a resort, we like it the best. Safe, great people, decent food, unbelievable beaches, easy to drive around. However, it does too have hurricane risk. Cheers. |
My fiance has already been to Curacao so that's off the list. We'd like to go somewhere neither of us have ever been. A few things I didn't mention, we like to eat so quality of food is important. We aren't too athletic so worry about what we would do in Costa Rica. We enjoy snorkeling, horseback riding, photography, and live music. We aren't sun worshipers so laying on the beach isn't important but a rainy honeymoon would just not be fun...

There is live music at a beach bar a few times a week, it has a real island atmosphere. Lots of sailing trips to take, tours of the island and watersports. There are also lots of ship wrecks around the cost for snorkeling. |

http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trave...esort-and-spa/ I used Marriott Cheques at this property in december. Beautiful property(we got a rate of $89 a night in december which was a steal), and if you like food, the restaurant scene in Puerta Vallarta is simply amazing! We also did horse back riding which was awesome and you can definitely find snorkeling and live music. |

Thanks for the advice! Italy: Grand Flora is a GREAT honeymoon destination! We were there in Nov 2009. Wonderful property and location. But tough to get awards. I would choose Italy over Aruba, personally. Congratulations! |
For what it's worth, I'm still struggling over booking our honeymoon in April of 2012. We did the Stellaris in Aruba a couple of years ago and enjoyed it immensely. Between the Stellaris and the Renaissance in Aruba it was a no brainer with our tastes. The Ren is downtown but you can easily take a cheap bus or taxi down there when you want. The beach at the Stellaris is on the best stretch on the island in my opinion. We are food lovers also and Aruba was one of our favorites when it came to dining! I still talk about the fish I had at Madame Jeanettes.
If you're willing to splurge a bit, the Ritz on Grand Cayman was by far our favorite island destination to date. It was pure luxury! My fiance still has stories about how she was doted on and waited on hand and foot and it was just a points vacation! IMO it was one of the best Marriott's I've ever been to! Just my 2 cents but please let us know what you decide... I'm still working on ours... |
