Renaissance Johor Bahru, Malaysia [Master Thread]

was looking for a stay in Melaka where there's a new Renaissance recently opened only to find that (yet) another Renaissance in Johor Bahru (about 140M further south) will be opening in December................. very limited info on Marriott website, but Johor Bahru offers an option of taking the bridge over into Singapore and taking the SMRT into the city (like those who stay in Shenzhen and transit into HKG as SQ has become even more expensive since the casinos opened)..........adds an option to staying at the Hyatt - now long in the tooth.......

Location seems to be excellent, close to the bridge to Singapore. However, the public security is always an issue in JB, robbery and bag snatching are very frequent there. Hopefully the hotel would provide shuttle service (even with charges) to Singapore.

having used the JB Hyatt several times before, highly doubtful, but there are several existing services over the bridge to connect with SMRT station............

That's not close, you definitely need a cab to get to the border. I don't think it'll be doable if you stay there and intending to visit SG.

take the CW1 over to Kranji SMRT (NS7)
http://www.causewaylink.com.my/singapore-bus#/-1/
every 15-minutes; RM 1.40
not recommended for day trips but if you fly into KL, you can "work"down the coast for a stop in Melaka, then JB, then spend the day in SQ and fly out of Changi (after having dinner at Jumbos!)

BKK, if it does open/you stay at it, please do a trip report! Thx!

Cheers.

the prop is already in-progress so don't see any reason why it won't eventually open (unlike several Halong props that never got started after being publically announced by a competitor brand)......... I'll try it in Feb as the rest of this year thru Jan already booked (even though we're doing SQ & KL in Nov but thats only because we need a dose of Jumbos in SQ and our friends in KL are having their #3 son)............

Its too bad the Ren looks like its northeast of the bridge. I've stayed in the JB area outside the city at a resort to the west when doing business near the port... but was closer to the 2nd link bridge than the northern one by JB.

I wonder if this location is a takeover from a previous hotel operator or a new building.

Definitely agree with dinner at Jumbo! East Coast Seafood Center ^ ^

will try and ck it out in Nov...............if not, out KL friends have relatives in JB............... at least it's an alternative to the Hyatt which was way out of town..............
Jumbos in Clarke Quay not bad either - not the one in the tourist area but the one away from that area under the bridge.......... best black pepper crabs ever (and we have some GR8 seafood places here in Theigh-land but take a yearly trip to Jumbos just for crabs)

It seems that the opening date has been postponed to Feb 2013

New opening: March 2013

Saw this on the website, is this really going to happen? Anyone around the area and can confirm that the structure is really there ;)

I was looking forward to their Dec12/Feb13 opening since I have a stopover in SIN and was hoping to stay here later in Feb. Now I hope that they will keep to the March opening since I have another stopover in SIN later in April.

Cheers!

What is wrong?

What is wrong with this place? The opening date has been postponed from Feb to April, later May and now I see it is June 2013.

Anyone know what is wrong with getting this place ready?

Cheers!

No idea, but I'm curious what would happen if we make a reservation on 1st June let say, and they postpone their opening...Room guarantee compensation?

Based on BKKLee's experience at other properties that delayed opening, I think you'll be lucky to be contacted at all much less get comp!

Cheers.

(recent) mixed results:

1.Ren Fira - no notice; CXLed resee as did not need to risk no availability
2.Rayong Marriott - notice from GM, but I made initial contact; CXLed first 2 resees after notice informed of party bookings
3.Mar Centre Shanghai - notice from Ops Mgr as they delay/CXLed 2 dif resees months apart - comp'ed 4-night return + $$
4. but seems the best were the folks at Park Hyatt Sydney who were VERY pro-active when they couldn't reopen as scheduled and not only contacted me before arrival but booked us for all nights in Mar HQ on their dime
