Element Calgary Airport, Canada [Master Thread]
The City of Calgary recently received an application for a zoning change to the site of the existing Four Points by Sheraton near the airport, for additional density. The comments in the request indicate the owners are planning to build an Element on the site, to the north of the existing hotel.

Any thoughts? I'm surprised more hotels would be going up there considering the closure of McKnight Trail for the new runway at YYC. An element seems like a good idea, but I'd have thought it would go up in the Airport Trail area.

I'd certainly welcome this addition. It's still pretty close to the airport and would be great for longer stays. I've had some poor experiences at the Staybridge that is nearby, so I'd love to have an alternative.

I'd much prefer something in south Calgary as there aren't currently any offerings.

Update - May 2015
Just thought I'd give FTers an update on this property -- it is being constructed as we speak and the concrete structure is almost complete. It is located directly north of the Four Points Calgary Airport which is hard to access now as vehicles need to drive around the construction fence. The sign on the outside of the fence gates says "Elements by Westin. Completion: Spring 2016." This property is located in the business/light industrial area commonly referred to as Sunridge, and there is a lot of commercial activity in the area. I suspect that this will be a welcome addition to the area for visitors who have business nearby.

I am booked for opening day on Friday night. I hope its done well like the Vancouver, errr, Burnaby, location, but if its operated by the same management as the adjacent Four Points I will be disappointed.
I will post an update over the weekend. ^

And for those FTers thinking this property is close to the airport....its not at all. There are dozens of hotels closer with the closure of the old main access road a few years ago.

One of my worst Starwood stays of all time.
Management incompetence on display throughout the stay, from check-in where credit card system will not allow use of SPG American Express or any American Express and the front desk agent advising me "we don't take those". No guest laundry available even though the room and connections are set-up as such including the words 'Guest Laundry' on the door with card access. Business Centre area set-up with cords everywhere on the floor to trip over as well as one not available and the other not setup for printing. Electrical outlets above nightstand not connected before mounted on the wall. No dish cloth or dish towel in kitchen. Working desk is completely empty of any amenities Plastic cups instead of glasses. The best part? A cheeky front desk agent calling me at 134 pm local time to ask "are you aware of check-out time?".
I had to doublecheck the Element Philosophy before posting:

It is clear that this property management has no clue what its doing.

maybe we should rename this thread "element calgary airport master thread"
had a 6 night stay and i must say it very standard element. good staff, mediocre breakfast, good enough coffee.
FREE. SECURE. HEATED. UNDERGROUND. PARKING.
Lobby full of fire+water damage restoration people. Looks like they took a major flood or something. The pool area had scaffolding near the roof. Looked intense but makes me wonder, if a pool area floods, did it really flood?
The restoration people walked around like they owned the place (taking elevator from convention ie 2 floor to lobby ie 1 instead of stairs, exiting elevator before guests, etc) but that sense of entitlement of alberta workers is normal.
Checkin average time as a gold
Pool not working, but allowed to use pool across the lot. they had nice steamroom and sauna, easily hacked thru cold towel.
Rooms clean, spacious, cheaper fixtures than what we used to in usa but still nice. They give you two over size pots but no pans. You gotta hustle front desk for a pan.
The filtered water tap is silly. In my room it only spat out hot water. But regular cold Calgary tap water is fine.
Instead of bounty brand disposable towels they left a roll of rough brown paper towels that you’d see in a bathroom. tacky af.250spg a night to skip cleaning. Internet free, speedtest 15mbps down 5mbps up. this is really impressive for canada. Windows that open andHeat that goes above 22c
the end. oh and did i say there is free heated underground parking
there a mcdonalds a 2 min walk away. there is a really highly decent italian restaurant even though their menu very basic. but they do a carbonara well and i guess you don't want to complicate things too much for the calgary crowd. but very very very good. their pizza is meh like all pizza in canada, i can make a decent pie home maid and tbh what they served tasted like what i would probably make in their kitchen.
really grate for mattress runs between 4 points.
